The perfect home self defense weapon?

It's funny, but way back when I was in law school, I kept a Smith 586 with 6" barrel for defending my apartment. It was my only centerfire weapon, due to the poverty of being a student. Now, many years later with several other firearms to choose from, I still have the 586 handy for things that go bump in the night. Yeah, it's now backed up with a Beretta 92 and six 15 round magazines, but it's the Smith I reach for. Six 158 grain +P LSWHP's should met me through the night, especially with another six in the speedloader and 90 9mm's nearby.

The perfect home self-defense weapon varies greatly for different people.
I would select a MAC-11 9mm submachinegun with a sound suppressor to avoid going deaf.
I was considering saying that a Striker-12 would be my home-defense weapon of choice (due to it's high-capacity), but up to twelve 12-gauge shots going off in quick succession might make your ears ring a little. If I had to take a shotgun, I would get a Serbu Super Shorty Mossberg base, converted to use detachable drum magazines.

My primary is my 870 HD in my safe. It has an electronic key pad. The problem with that is if I mess up the combo, the safe will lock me out for like ten minutes. On top of the safe, I have a mini Gun-Vault that has my primary CCW piece which is a G19 in case the safe locks me out. In side the safe is not only my fully loaded shotgun with 00 2-3/4 inch buckshot but also my fully loaded 642, my fully loaded S&W 7 shot model 520, and seven loaded mags for my M1A scout. The 642 and 520 are lodaded up with Speer 135gr.+P .38 SPCL's. I'm not worried about it.

It has an electronic key pad.

Does anyone else worry about an EMP blast permanently locking up the safes (and guns) with the electronic keypads?

New Home Defense load on the market..........

Folks,

Check out "www.DixieSlugs.com"

Check out Mr. Gates' new "Tri-Ball" loads in shotshell config.

At 40 yards, the balls only spread 6-7 inches.

I hear he can't keep them in stock.

Just Food for Thought!

Of course with the Mini 14, you'll have a round that will actually have adequate terminal effects after you penetrate the subject's body armor. You don't have that with the P90.

Jeff

Interesting... that's exactly what the .308 supporters say about the .223. ;)
Regarding terminal effects, while I would like to see more "oomph" from the 5.7 rd I would also very much like to see hard data supporting your asseratation that the 5.7 doesn't have adequate terminal effects (and I can post examples of *every* man-portable caliber failing at one time or another, even 12ga slugs). Given the exact same situation (ie: range, angle, same determined & aggressive attacker, etc), how much practical difference would we see between the 5.7 & other rds given a non-CNS hit? (Hard data, please...)
Regardless, I'll take the lower power in exchange for not having to put up w/the .223's excessive muzzle blast when used indoors not to mention the other advantages of the PS90 platform that I mentioned in my earlier post.
Tomac
PS- Yes, the currently available SS195 5.7 load does penetrate Level IIa body armor.
