I was walking to the scooter with my gf last night after going to a club; it was about 1am..

while walking on the mostly deserted sidewalk, a car started following us...

You know what I'm talking about... the slow slow slow rolling, as he followed at my 7 o'clock and he started rolling down his passenger side window, and leaned over to "start something"..

Here in Taiwan, I don't have a gun... (ug!)

So what should I have done in that case? I do carry a knife on me at all times, but I'm at a great disadvantage because I have my gf with me..

Assuming that you have at sometime discussed your options of dealing with situations with GF, stop, turn to face vehicle thus making them aware that you know about them. GF should move to be in a protected position so that she can leave scene to seek help for you. Nothing as unsatisfying as GF standing there screaming and pissing away what ever chance she has for getting away and therefore wasting your efforts.

Your only advantage if things go wrong is your willingness to use whatever means you have to the badguys disadvantage. Attitude will carry you thru more situations that could turn bad by turning others minds to letting things go.

Don't knock a knife either

"just a knife?" I would have to say that a knife in capable hands is a much more effective weapon within 5 feet than a gun is. It may not have the deterance...but anyone who has been cut before knows what I mean....knives scare me a heck of a lot more than guns. Besides, a blade between the ribs does a crap load more damage than some bullets. Carry a knife with at least a 5 inch locking/fixed blade. 6 to 7 inches is ideal though.

Not that I'm a knife master....thats why I carry a gun, but trying to get off an effective shot during actual hand to hand is pretty darn hard. I didn't used to think so until during some job related training, we learned how deadly a knife is within 21 ft. Many cops have had to learn that the hard way.

Yeah, I'd like to think I'd have the coolness to reverse direction and get myself between the car and GF (unless she wasn't all that special to you...).

Yrs ago, colder than he...ck, walking home from college class alone. Car with four guys went by and hollered "something". I turned and looked, almost instinctively. Heard brakes and that low growl of reverse. Kept walking, opened my little 3" Old Timer. When the car stopped along side I had the knife concealed behind my gloved hands touching: grip in right, blade behind open left hand. Felt my heavy coat offered some protection but 4 on 1 "ain't gud"! "You say somethin'?" "Not me." I was a little above the car and figured I'd put all 135lbs (then) behind my foot slamming the door on somebody part way out as my first move, after that: plan B. They drove off, and I breathed again. Attitude maybe.
Stay safe.

I reflect back on all the posts that I have read from you twoblink and I can only come to two conclusions. You need to get the hell out of that country and I ain't never visiting.

Ditto. A knife is definitely better than nothing, but give me a gun any day.

Whip out cell phone and start chatting (to those useless police of yours).

Look at them, make sure they know you know they are there.
Then, walk swiftly in the other direction to break contact. If they want trouble they will have to get out or whip a 180 if they want to continue.
You know, they might have just been checking your GF's rear-end out.....
