The 'unknown' safety rule: Never try to catch a dropped gun

I heard a credible story of someone who tried to arrest the ballistic trajectory of a Smith N-frame, with loud, but thankfully, not tragic, results. Just sayin'.

"he grabbed it by the barrel as the buttstock hit the ground,"

if this was the case - then the rifle discharged from contact with the ground and not his attempt to catch it. Grabbing the barrel could have resulted in it pointing towards his head - but also could just as well had resulted in pointing it away from his head.

So do we follow a hard rule that says let a gun fall - even if it is a rifle or shotgun or pistol that may discharge if it hits the ground sending a round in a random direction? Personally, I think the idea of using your foot and shin to cushion or break the fall makes the most sense. But a hard fast rule does not seem to make sense here.

I hate it when it happens. It puts undue scratches on the gun. Dropped my Kimber UCC II (loaded, cocked and locked) onto a hard wood floor. It bounced and slide up against a wall. Did not fire, but did add a few more scratches prematurely.

yes, of course it is gun specific, make/model,carry mode
but most of us gun forum folks are not the proverbial "one and only one gun" guy, we carry and shoot a variety

not all that often that you will ever drop your gun while holstered, no matter your make/model, long/short, or carry mode... if it happens at all, very likely would happen during transitional events... obviously unrehearsed and unpredictable

dropped = "uncontrolled" by definition

life is not a movie, if you drop that HOT cup of coffee, let it fall (jump out of the way if you can)
if you drop that gun, let it fall

if ye must practice drop & catch, put a silver dollar on the back of your hand, "heads up", arm straight out, eyes closed
drop it and catch it before it hits the floor
see how many times you catch it heads up
if you catch it tails up, consider yourself shot with your own gun, by your own hand

(it's a little bit like dropping silver dollars into a metal waste can, instead of a one armed bandit in Vegas.. the best result you can realistically hope for is the same, but at least you won't hurt yourself)

i thought everyone knew this im not going to try to catch a sharp bomerang(mad max) im not going to try to catch a falling knife(EDscenario) and im not going to try to catch a falling gun.(there are mostly 2 scenarios for this, its safety is on and it falls from a table, or it falls from ur hands and since its in ur hands the safety is probably off)

like when i was watching the movie harsh time, christian bale who is in this fight scene with 4 latinos wanting to cut his taco up catches a S&W that is thrown to him and i just imagined him catching it by the trigger and shooting himself in the head, movie woulda ended pretty quickly :p but i noticed that the shots he shot right after he got the gun was CGI and not blacks,

i think the movies armorer knew the danger in throwing a loaded firearms and there they had to cgi the shots.

but yeah dont be catching no falling guns.

Depends on what it is. I'm fairly (100%) certain that if I drop one of my uncocked single actions, it will be much better and fairly (100%) safe to catch it.
