Think shotguns will ever be "cool" again?

I didn’t realize my question would be so questioned lol.

I’m 30 and live in TN. Most people I know just don’t care about shotguns. I doubt anyone that likes guns would turn down a free shotgun, but I don’t know anyone buying them over rifles, pistols, and even revolvers besides myself.

The couple of friends/coworkers I have that did end up picking up a shotgun in the last couple of years had no interest until I finally convinced them how great they were and let them shoot my TS12.

Maybe it’s different elsewhere but it’s almost like people see them as useless (compared to any other type of firearm) where I live. If I post any of my rifles, pistols, or revolvers (especially revolvers for some reason) on Facebook, people always comment asking what I want for one or two of them. If it’s obviously a shotgun, nobody says a word. If it’s a tactical shotgun people ask about it. As soon as they find out it’s a shotgun, no interest. That’s not an exaggeration or anything. I just don’t see any interest in shotguns anymore. When I was a kid, shotguns were all you saw in people’s homes around here. It doesn’t help that all the video games has people that are just getting into guns thinking all shotgun ammo just disappears in thin air after 6ft.
I think you hit the nail on the head here, there's two factors at play as to why shotgun popularity is waning: 1. hunting isn't the main reason for gun ownership anymore and 2. the video games don't help, nor does the focus on rifles in movies like John Wick.

In the early days of games the shotgun was the most powerful gun you could get because moving enemies were easier to hit and in games like Doom it was extremely powerful. Things started to change in the late 90s, hit boxes in 3D games got better, controls more accurate, and distances in the game grew. As distance grew, the shotgun became more a liability than an asset and once Call of Duty came about it was done. Kids playing the games and then going out to buy their first guns when they come of age will look at a shotgun and consider it near useless.

But there's other factors involved with shotguns and the biggest one is the recoil is unpleasant for many and the operation of a pump too prone to failure with a person under stress. Training can improve that, but people either lack the time or interest in training around a combat of arms that is decreasing in use among professionals in police and military for obvious reasons. Combine high ammo prices and the size and weight of the ammo where more 9mm or 5.56 can be stored and cost less and that one, two punch is a KO for the shotgun.

Decades ago when hunting was the #1 reason for gun ownership, the shotgun was everywhere and when at the time bolt actions and lever actions and a revolver were what were popular, the shotgun was probably the most superior firearm to have for home defense. Today, when the #1 reason for gun ownership is self defense and where home invasions are often done by teams, the capacity and slow firing nature of the shotgun compared to a semi auto is not advantageous.

Personally, I only own one, maybe two shotguns, a "tactical" over/under 12ga and a .410/.22 combination gun. Break actions appeal to me for their simplicity, but I do have plans to buy the .410 KSG coming out this year and it would be my first pump action. I had thought about getting the .410 Shockwave, but recent ATF ambivalence around pistol braces has me thinking long and hard about stockless smoothbore "firearms" and their future legality. The KSG would take up no more space than the Shockwave, have a stock and a longer barrel, and of course double the capacity while probably weighing less as well.

As you can tell I like .410, so what would it take to get me interested in a pump or semi auto 12ga? Probably hunting. Pump 12's are cheap, so it's not a cost thing, it's a lack of interest or need. All my 12ga needs are met by the over/under and my home defense needs are met by one of those "weapons of war" the anti's are all screaming about now.

When all the gangbangers in their TikTok videos are flashing their Glocks with the giggle switch disconnectors made in China that they bought turning them into full auto machine guns, I think everyone should have a semi auto "weapon of war", not some coach gun that "Bribe 'em" Joe Biden says to run out onto their porch and blast into the air.

I have rifles and love rifles. There's no disputing the capability of even just your typical 556. 00 buck is no slouch either though. There's room for both, which is why I'm sure everybody here has multiples of both
I think having one or a handful of good quality shotguns makes good sense. The pump action shotgun is likely to be of the very last on the chopping block in terms of politicians and state legislatures targeting certain guns for certain features. Shotguns are extremely reliable and versatile but there is no denying the superior capacity, range and ballistics of a semi automatic rifle, like an AR over a shotgun, almost anybody can shoot an AR well, the 12ga pump shotgun i would say has a much steeper learning curve and follow up shots and range to an inexperienced shooter will be sluggish and poor in comparison to an AR.

When did shotguns get to be uncool?

A useful tool can't be uncool. It is what it is.

Semi-auto center-fire rifles don't take the place of shotguns.

Shotguns are devastating in close quarters. Small (5.56) semi-auto rifles reach out further and penetrate a whole lot more than buckshot. For actual "out-there" shooting and much deeper penetration, there's the >= 6.5 center-fire rifles. Though a 7.62 mm / .30 cal fan, I'm so very glad to see the 6.5 coming back. The 6.5 Swedish has been vindicated.:D

I love shotguns! O/U, pump, auto, SxS and single shot, I find them to be somewhat simple, yet highly versatile, for so many things. From fun games, to feeding the family on anything from dove and rabbit to buck and bear, to the awful potential of ending a felons deadly threat to our life; we can use a shotgun for any one of those tasks.

Practicality of the shotgun over a defensive carbine? In reality, for anything other than birds, no. My career went from the 4-shot 870 with 00 buck in the patrol car in 1991, to the seven-shot Benelli in 1994, to the 20-shot Mini-14 in 2007 with 55 gr SP ammo and finished with the 30-shot AR-15 with 64 gr bonded ammo in 2023. Yes, for most patrol functions and offensive police situations, the shotgun has been replaced with the rifle.

Very observant agencies learned hard lessons from the Norco bank robbery in 1980. These forward-thinkers equipped patrol cars with rifles a decade or more before North Hollywood in 1997 woke the others up to the fact that shotguns can’t compete with body armor, or be effective at distance in a prolonged engagement. A rifles greater range in our rural areas, better accuracy (improving round accountability) in urban areas and greater penetration against armored/barricaded suspects has ultimately pushed the shotgun out of many, if not most, patrol units today. This, coupled with movies and fantasy shoot-‘em-up gaming, has further pushed shotguns aside and made them be thought of merely as “grandpas old gun in the closet” in the minds of many younger people. :(

That is too bad, because there is still a ton of life left in them. In fact, I was sure thinking long and hard about buying a clean, used BPS .410 I saw on a gun store inventory sheet just the other day…;)

Stay safe.

Shotguns are cool, but they have capacity and recoil problems.

These are largely solved by 1.75" shells and the Mossberg 590S. Shorty shells have smaller payloads, but produce less recoil and higher capacities. The short shell requires redesign to the feed mechanism to function reliably, but the 590S feeds 1.75", standard, and magnum length shells without issue.

At over 60 I can't recall a time when shotguns where cool. Useful, effective, adaptable, down to earth, hardworking, simple, common, reliable, even almost mandatory around the farm, YUP. Cool not so much. There has always been the newest, latest, greatest, XYZ to overshadow the old & just plain works shotgun.

Think shotguns are a victim of the "precision" mentality.

Modern shooters use all kinds of aids to convince themselves that they can shoot well.

Field Marksmanship is almost a lost art, and there are no aids on a skeet range, or in the field.

So it's hard, requiring marksmanship, and they don't like it and quit.

My boys fight over the shotguns, but then, they are also crack shots from field positions.

I like video games and movies but they have zero influence on what I buy .

Cool?

Dunno what that is. Maybe a rifle like an STG 57 or 58. Or Merkel Helix Speedster.

However.......my favorite long gun at this time is a shotgun. A Browning Citori 20 ga. Dove n bunnies gonna proly not think it cool. No engraving. Boring wood ( hunting gun so will get character ).

The ol lady said get a higher grade in 12 for clays. Honestly, I have more fun w the little 20, dont care about score

ANSWER: Wood and Cost. I can pick up a nice Rambo AR, all plastic and metal still for under a $1000 and customize it by myself for only a few bucks more. Shotguns have gone up in price substantially and good, pretty wood is hard to come by. Hard to find a good new shotgun for under a grand. Any modifying it can get costly. Now most trap shooters would disagree, but there are also a lot of high school kids shooting trap after school. But then again shot shells are going up in price compared to some AR ammo.

What do you consider a good shotgun?

We'll see how "cool" the new TBP 12 is. It ran S&B 00 just fine on a test. Gotta get it a Buck Rogers paint job, though.

What about those old BRI slugs and their testing for LE?

I hunt some. Used to hunt a fair bit. Started out as a kid w rifles and handguns but got into dove and goose hunting in my late 20s.

Like a 20 for upland and a 12 mag for honkers.

A triple is very cool.

Shotguns have always been cool and I have a bunch of them… I am funds off my M4 benelli tacticool semiautomatic and my browning citori for shooting trap.

All you fellers above can be down on shotguns all you want. Especially the tactical tommy's. They will never go out of style for us that hunt quail/doves ducks/deer/rabbits/turkey's etc And those of us that shoot skeet and sportnig clays. I know what I like and I don't give a damn about being cool or the flavor of the moment.

I'm surprised. As an older guy, I thought shotguns have become way MORE cool these days. There didn't used to be nearly as many tactical shotguns available as there are now! I used to think my Mossberg 590 Marine Coat was a cool tactical shotgun. Lately, the new stuff out there makes me think it's outdated and I need an upgrade! :)
Yes!! I was thinking the same. I was not aware that shotguns were not “cool”.

Seems to me they are more popular than ever. But, I think the reasons for owning a shotgun have changed drastically for many.
