Tribune recommends that Chicago surrender

...and the people of Chicago keep people like Daley in office and give us candidates like Barack Obama.
Think that's bad? Have you been listening to the news from Detroit? Detroiters put that moron in office twice. Now that they're getting what they deserve, they want him out. There's an awful lot of stupid people in America. Sounds like Daley should be partnered with Kilpatrick and let them fight over who gets the bed.

To the other Illinois cities that gave up, congratulations and welcome to a lower crime rate.

As far as I'm concerned Daley is doing all of us a BIG favor. Let them bring it to the highest court.

This sounds overly simplistic and probably is, but the obvious solution for you Chicago guys would be to not keep electing Daley and other Machine members. Then again, I'd imagine conservatives are at quite a minority within the city limits....

I can't remember the last time someone ran against Daley. To be honest, I don't know if Chicago ever had a Republican mayor, conservative, or otherwise. Term limits might help. Of course, It hasn't helped New York. In any case, with at least, half the nation supporting Barack Obama, you can't limit your criticism to Chicago voters only. For those who still don't know, Obama is a product of the Chicago Democratic Machine.

"Oh, it's that pesky Supreme Court again. That's allright because I, the mighty Emporer Dickie Daley, know what is good for you my loyal subjects."
Remember, this is the mayor who had the runway at Miggs Field bulldozed in the middle of the night because his wife wanted a park there. This is the city where dead people have been voting regularly for years. You think he's going to let the Supreme Court stand in his way?

If gun control worked, the two cities with the toughest gun control laws should be the safest. Instead they are close to the two worst.

Mastiff hit the nail on the head. Simple reasoning should have made it clear that banning handguns doesnt work, in fact, it makes things worse! I would have expected that "a bigshot lawer" like Daley, would have seen that.

I fully expect to be pilloried for this, but here goes.

In a lot of ways, the people of Chicago are caught in a no win situation. When the first Daley machine collapsed, the city ended up with Harold Washington as mayor. The sheer chaos of his short stint in office no doubt made people think there was only really a choice between the black political machine and re-establishing the Daley machine. If you look at what happened to Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, and DC when black politicians took over, you might understand just why the power brokers decided another Daley machine, regardless of how crooked, was a better choice.

You have to understand that in Chicago there are really three political machines. One is hispanic, another is black, and the third is Daley. The black and hispanic political machines are heavily tied to street gangs, and even more corrupt than the Daley machine (as impossible as that sounds). There is no other political machine to vote for, so the average citizen makes a choice between two really horrendous choices, and a merely awful one.

Jane Byrne and Michael Bilandic were no prizes either.

Neither of them had any real base of support.

The best chance Chicago had was when there was a move afoot to draft Jim Thompson, the former governor. He declined to run. While he was a RINO, he was also pretty clean. He might well have had the juice to clean things up.

Chicago is quite a corrupt city. Those of you who were around in the mid-90's might remember the El Rukn corruption scandal. The El Rukns managed to literally buy off quite a few CPD, Cook County Sheriff's, and even a few judges to allow the continual existence of their franchise. Just the tip of the iceberg.

Daley's not all bad, the public pensions for most city workers are far more secure and solvent than the state worker retirement pensions, which have been raided by the state assembly.

He does have to suck up to the south side and the defeatist mentality regarding crime. If he didn't bow down to their (unrealistic) wishes, Chicago would have another black mayor. Both the city council and the Cook County board have royally screwed the populace.

God I can't stand Daley. He is such an arrogant SOB. Every time he's on tv he looks like he's about to explode.

Hehehe. He's stressed out wondering how he's gonna keep everybody paid off when the economy goes to pot and he can't raise taxes any higher.

Again I ask;

Why doesn't some one with a crafty lawyer bring these corrupt politicians into civil court for VIOLATING the OATH OF OFFICE they take every time they RE-BUY a seat of POWER in our great democratic experiment?

If you can answer me this...

Because no one in a position to do anything about it has a spine. It's really that simple. Fear.
