I just purchased a Trijicon Accupoint TR24 ($700 out the door) for three gun competition use. I wanted the versatility of a 1x-4x scope and felt the Trijicon was a good choice. I must admit, however, that I am second guessing my decision (not to mention the grief my wife is giving me...I knew I should have not said anything)!

I will be putting the scope on a S&W M&P 15MOE. If possible, I would like to keep the purchase under $150, but that may be wishful thinking. I have never mounted a scope so any advice/insight would be welcomed.

I'm using the ~$20 UTG quick detach 6 screw medium rings from Centerfire Systems with my TR24 on my Keltec RFB (7.62x51, a lot more recoil than 5.56). They've held zero being removed and reattached twice after sending the rifle back to Kel-Tec for repairs, and several others times just to see if they would.

Probably the hardest thing to do is to get the scope plumb to the receiver so there is minimal "cross-talk" when adjusting L/R vs. U/D. This is really quite difficult if you shoot long range and "canting" the rifle when shooting will cause the same effect. some small levels can help a lot.

Don't over tighten the screws that clamp the rings together they need to be snug (in-lbs, not ft-lbs) and are best tightened slowly in a rotating X pattern, sorta like torquing down a cylinder head.

American Defense, LaRue, Borbo, and I would say Burris (P.E.P.E.R.) mounts are the way to go. As briansmithwins said said, putting a $700 optic in a $20 mount is going to leave you wanting. I tried that with an Aimpoint in a $20 mount, the screw would get a lot of heat-expansion and the mount would become very loose after about 50 rounds. Accuracy was shotgun-like, and thats with a 18" Noveske SS barrel! The aimpoint now lives in a AD QD mount that I am very happy with the setup.

On the lower more budget-minded end, I would say a good set of Leupold rings will work as well. Also, the P.E.P.E.R. mount is availible with a QD feature and is in the $90 range, for what its worth.

Edit: I would also recommend looking at some of the rings from Vortex as well. I haven't used them myself, but if they are anything like their scopes, they should be good to go. Also www.swfa.com is a great site to browse what all is available in both optics and mounts, if you haven't found it already.

It really does not matter to me if I have a quick detach or not...at least I say that now. By the way, is that your multi-gun blog/web site? If it is, I've been there before and really liked it.

I've hardly ever used the quick detach feature of the LaRue mounts I've bought. I have used the adjustably and have enjoyed the fact that I've never had one come loose for any reason.

Go with larue, American defense or bobro. Don't cheap out on the mount. Definitely don't sully your rifle with $20 made in china rings. If you dont need QR larue has a cheaper option. Fir the love of god do NOT get UTG. I wouldn't even want that stuff on an airsoft gun

Thanks for the great information. Since the TR24 is 30mm, I would assume I would need a 30mm LaRue. Is this correct?

Yep. If you get the version w/o the QD levers it's $50 less.
