I've made a truck lock box(handgun)out of a modified old small ammo can($15) secured with a padlock and cabled to the seat bracket until or if I find something better. My setup requires only one key and fits under my seat out of sight. I use it for times I've got to go to "prohibited" places that now include restaurants that sell alcohol for consumption in my state. Don't want a combination lock or biometric. What do you use when you've got to leave your handgun in your vehicle for a short time?

Most vehicles have a locking glove box.

That's what I use.

Rear seats usually are bolted flush to the floor. Anything hidden under the seat is unlikely to be discovered by a thief.

Remove ALL STICKERS from your vehicle.
I've had my vehicles broken into twice in my long life and both times the first thing they got into was the glove box which is easily pried open. One time it was broken into I was parked outside of the police station while I was inside the PD. I never put any stickers or anything else that would suggest I'm a gun owner on anything. Our laws are forcing me to leave a gun in my vehicle sometimes and I'm doing this for CYA as well as for taking reasonable measures to keep the gun from getting stolen. I've taken pictures to prove the gun, if stolen, was locked up. IMG_2795.JPG

I don't really have an answer to your question but, I'll share whatvI do. I don't really leave a firearm in my car overnight. When I do leave my EDC in my car for only for a few minutes to a couple of hours, I will simply put my firearm under my seat or floor mat depending on the size.

We have the government's permission to carry inside bars, and either way, I don't really go to bars in the first place. The only time I would visit a prohibited place would be if I was getting out of my car at my children's school or going into the court house. Those places usually have cameras everywhere, L.E. riding by, and have some foot traffic aka witnesses. I will simply park out in the open away from other vehicles so there is clear visibility of my car 360 degree with everyone from the main road, etc can see it. Otherwise, I will part near the main entrance where there is heavy foot and vehicle traffic.

I rarely have to leave a gun in my car. I have a pair of handcuffs latched on the seat mount. I can always run it through the trigger guard and tuck it under the seat. (Unless it’s a revolver, I’d clear the gun first). Or, a good bicycle cable lock.

If I did it on a regular basis, I’d spend the money. Heavy cable around the seat frame or even bolt it to the floorboard. I really like Simplex Locks.

There is, literally, a vault in my trunk. Big steel military footlocker. Two Master padlocks. Cabled to the frame of the car. Velcro on the bottom so it sticks to the carpet. I can secure anything I want in that. But. It’s not very convenient.

I decided to carry a long gun in my trunk. I spend a lot of time in California. The broken down AR with a bunch of 30 round mags I used to carry in the vault made me a rolling felon in California. So, I went with a shotgun.

Krytonite bike lock. Around the butt. Heavy cable to the frame.

Nothing is theft proof. But, I can make it difficult.

I keep a hornady alpha elite lock box with the cable under my driver seat. I like it because it’s over 2 in on the inside and it will fit my pistol while in the kydex holster. Most lock boxes are barely big enough on the inside it will barely shut on a double stack outside the holster. I never leave a firearm over night in a vehicle. Only time I use the lock box is when I go to the court house/school etc. It also doubles as my tsa approved case when flying I can cable lock it to the bars inside my suitcase.

I like your metal ammo box solution. I do pretty much the same thing ( cable locked to seat frame & box padlocked ), except instead of the ammo box, I use a small Pelican case.

I have a couple lock boxes that are keyed secured with a cable to wrap around some structural component of the car. It won’t stop the most determined felon but will slow him down.

I forget the manufacturer.

Any containers the auto manufacturers install in their vehicles can be easily defeated by a large screw driver.

The boxes provide a little better deterrence.

My youngest daughter went to college in St. Louis, MO. Her car was broken in twice. The police said it was because she had TN tags on the car and the crooks thought she must have had a gun in it. She didn’t.

I bought a pair of small gun safes, both keyed alike. The set came with 2 safes and 2 cables. I made up to more cables, so there are 2 cables in each of our vehicles, out of sight. Generally, I keep one box safe in each car, but we can quickly put both in a single vehicle if we need to have space to lock up more than one handgun.

I have a Harbor Freight lock box that holds two handguns. I use the box when going to gun free zones. I understand it will not deter a determined thief, but relatively safe from smash and grab. I do not leave a handgun in the vehicle overnight even in my locked garage.

My car and truck doesn't have any lockable compartments. My car is a hatchback with spare tire compartment in the floor. That's where I keep a ruger lock box cabled to the spare tire rack thingamado or whatever you call it. If they want it and have the will and time they can find a way no matter what. But, they will have to work for it.
But, Thats one thing I have never done. Leave a gun in a vehicle. If I know I can't take it in, I will leave it at home before I leave it in a car.
The box is just in case something goes wrong. Been there a couple years now and never used.

Get a combo lock over a key. You can lose the key. Also combo locks cannot be opened for officials if you “forgot the number”.

Tuffy Products makes some very good steel lock boxes, glove boxes, console inserts, and such, largely for Jeeps, SUVs and trucks, but some are universal-mount.

I have been using Tuffy products for years and currently have a security box under my rear seat in my jeep Gladiator.

This is what I use by Tuffy.
