Truck gun choice....

My perfect truck gun would be a Chinese sks (normal sks) with a barrel cut down to 16" with a prince50 paratrooper sight (winged ak type), park under moly coat job, with ati talon stock, and marcus mag adapter to use tapco 20 and promag 30 round sks mags with the duck bill cut off with tech sights.

Sent from my mind using ninja telepathy.

For a "truck gun" it's hard to beat an H&R/NEF single shot in just about any caliber you can imagine, scoped or fixed sights. A .243 Win with a suitable scope shouldn't set anyone back too much, and, if it gets bounced around in the truck and dinged, who would care?

I would go with the Ruger American. I like the way the gun handles, and I much prefer the removable clip magazine in a truck gun. With the integrated bases, get high quality Weaver-style steel rings and make sure that they are tight.

for a truck gun in my case I need more than one shot, sometimes I drive up on literally 50-60 hogs at a feeder or out rooting in the open. with a semi auto like mini 14, sks, I can leave a few dead right there. then got to drag em off to gut pile. cant do that with a single shot.

Found a model 10 243 at the LGS today with a scope. Was priced cheap enough, so I thought, what the heck.

Brought it home to give it a try. Only shot it from 75 yards, but I think it will work.

I love the .243 as a groundhog/ coyote cartridge (and deer and ...).
Isn't stevens made by savage?

by the way, a cheapo rifle zipper case can save your rifle a bunch of truck scars

Stevens 200 are basically model 10/110 without the accutrigger. you can make beautiful tack drivers out of a 200 for just a few extra bucks. (pardon the pun)

+ 1 on the Marlin XS7...

If you're going to stick with what the LGS has in stock I'd go Stevens 200 first, Ruger American second (not a bad rifle but I've had very mixed results accuracy wise from the Ruger rifles I've owned). And last, the Savage Axis, these guns have had some problems....

I'd go with the Stevens 200.

Quite a bit of rifle in an economical package.

Ruger rifles are pretty good for the most part, especially the 10/22, the M77 and the No. 1. Can't say I care much for their semi-auto handguns. Their revolvers are well built but ugly, I prefer S&W on those. The Ruger American is a good deal for the money, but I can't say that I care for it's looks or feel. It's accurate, but to me feel and then looks make up some of the equation as well. Feel and looks count for far less with me then reliability or accuracy, but I'm not going to pretend that they don't matter at all. The stock on the Stevens 200 is ugly, but it feels alright and it can always be painted.

Some posters have brought up the possibility of the scope being knocked off target through constant movement, but if you protect the rifle by placing it in a Pelican case or some other foam padded, water/air tight case in my experience it's less of a consideration. Your case will get bumped around and scratched up, but almost every time I go shooting I place my scoped rifles in such a case and throw them in the back seat and I haven't had a scope get knocked off target yet.

Perhaps you could also secure it with a cable to help prevent it from being stolen by a car burglar looking to steal your radio, CD's or other belongings. There's also the possibility of installing a police style rack in your truck or car. I don't believe that anyone has touched on that issue yet. Providing some scumbag with a gun (even one unlikely to be used in a street robbery or drug deal gone bad) isn't something you want to do.

Savage Axis is the way. They are very accurate out of the box. 243 is my chose for a deer gun if you are not mountain hunting. GOOD LUCK

I am actually going thru a similar decision although a slightly different scenario. But it is to protect nice guns, mainly from myself. I am buying a Remington 7600 tomorrow in 30-06 with a 3-9 Bushnell for $300. Seems like a good deal. Now hopefully it will eject shells.
