Hi,

I have a friend that I hunt with occasionally who once killed two deer with one shot, at last light one night. Distance? About 250 yards. He hadn't seen the second one about 30 yards behind the first.

Three years ago, at last light in mature planted pines, it happened to me.

Two deer came trotting along, paralleling me left to right. Unfortunately, their path would take them behind me about 40 yards.

I had just enough time to ease around in the ladder stand so I could fire behind me. They stopped, probably sensing me in the area, then one moved
a little further so I could see the head and neck.

In a couple more steps it would be too far behind me to get a shot with the rifle . . . and my hold was steady so I touched off the .270. The deer went right down. Five minutes later, legal hunting time was over and since the deer hadn't moved, I got down.

Walking up, I got a big surprise . . . two does, laying nose to nose! The first died with a neck shot and the other through the heart.

Ironically, I'd taken an entire week's vacation to hunt and hadn't seen a deer until that Thursday night . . . and now I had two for the freezer!

I'm left-handed . . . and this was also the first time I'd had to shoot right-handed/wrong eye too.

STRANGE THINGS SOMETIMES HAPPEN IN THE WOODS!

Something like that happened on my folk's farm. They let two guys hunt. Story is they got out of their truck to walk to their stands and they immediately spotted a deer at the tree-line. So one guy takes his shot and when they walked over there were two deer down. I guess they were pretty bummed, the whole hunt lasted about 20 seconds!

My Mom told me the story, so it's gotta be true...

two deer

had a similar story a fieind of mine was out hunting and saw a deer on the ridge he took the shot and it was still standing so he shot again and it went down, when he got up there there was two deer down ,so he didn't miss the first one he was shocked

not deer but hogs

not deer but i have seen 1 shot kill 2 hogs. First hog it went through the neck and in to the chest of the second one. first one dropped instantly and the other one ran about 30 yards. My cousin took the shot with his 25-06.

Yep it happens. Shot "one" that we jumped pushing a draw. Two were laying there deader than a mackrel. Was really gald to have extra hunters with me that day to help drag and tag.

one shot one kill

Buffalo Bore tells of a complaint about their 35 Rem 220 gr load. The hunter shot his buck, killing it, killing a second and wounding a third deer !!! Now that's over penetration !

I was muzzleloader hunting a few years ago and had two does side by side. I started to try a two for one shot but I didn't. I let the biggest one walk into the clear and busted her.

I have seen both a buck and doe tag filled with one shot from a .243. The buck and doe were running neck and neck and the guy shot the buck through the shoulder and a bullet fragment went into the doe and hit the doe in the heart.

I saw a buddy of mine kill a rabbit with a rabbit once. He had just shot one and upon retrieving it another busted from the cover of a pear it was hiding in. He had the rabbit in his right hand and rifle in the left and a look of what do I do on his face. He threw the dead rabbit at the live rabbit and shouldered the .22, no need to shoot. Weirdest thing I saw on that trip.

Hey usmccpl...

Looks like you're going to have to change your signature line, huh?

Killing two deer with one shot can get you arrested in some places. You have two deer with only one tag. It means you shouldn't have taken the shot. "Accidents" like this obviously happen, but you're left scrambling to find a hunter with an unfilled tag. That's usually not terribly difficult though.

Actually finding a hunter with an unfilled tag is what will get you in trouble. It goes against the don't fill other's tag part of the regulations. although I don't know how they can prove it unless they are out there watching you or someone tattles. If you accidentally shoot two deer with one bullet and have only one tag- call the CO's and tell them what happened. They know that "this" happens sometimes. They will take the other deer away but at least you don't have to worry and you did the "honest" thing. I think they donate the other deer to the hunters against hunger program or whatever.

BTW, I know this because I asked once:cool: .
at least this is how it's done in Indiana.

Same here in ID. A friend of mine did a two-for-one (doe and fawn) a few years ago, and the warden just took the fawn for charity meat. :)

I have gotten three Prairie Dogs with one shot.....Brothers brother in law got two deer with one shot a few years ago. I saw them both go down on the shot.

I had an uncle do that maybe 8 or so years ago, a buck and a doe; one through the neck and one in the heart. But to be fair, he was only aiming for the heart shot; the doe got in the way :D

Dan Bowers over at Hangunhunt.com just took 2 with 1 shot using an XP-100-- 7 WSM/162 gr. Horn. A-Max. He has damage control tags-- so it was legal.

"...is what will get you in trouble..." You're right, of course. Mind you, a lot of it has to do with where you are. Up here, we have a lot of rules that are odd. Party hunting for deer and moose, for example. Five hunters with 5 tags. Everybody must have a tag, but there's no rule about who shoots the game. If one guy shoots two, another in the same party can legally tag it and the party can only take three more. Proper number of tags for buck or doe or bull or calf(I said it was odd) or cow. The party members must be in immediate contact with each other and not more than 5 km apart. Shoot a moose and you must tell everybody else immediately. This applies for either moose or deer.

In recent years in north central Minnesota most areas allow 5 deer each of either sex.
A couple years ago we had 20 deer with 4 hunters.
we worked 2 straight days cutting all that up and donated it to anybody we could find that wanted some.

Rallyhound - why kill so many deer?

Why take 20 deer just to give it away? Most states motivated by insurance companies are allowing more deer to be than the average family would eat. Does not mean we need to limit out. When I give redfish and shrimp to people and I am confident they will eat them. Unless they are really special folks Deer I am afraid stays in the freezer or is thrown away when people take it. I took a large elk this week and I have been invited to hunt three places here in MS and one in Texas. I am debating if I can harvest any whitetail's and handle that much meat.
Just a thought.

The Minnesota DNR sets those limits in certain areas because thats how many deer need to be taken to maintain a healthy herd.
The local food shelfs and veterans home are thrilled to get the meat.
It is not uncommon to get 20-30 deer in my garden at night, all at the same time.
If you think the misquitos are think in the everglades in july you should see the deer in northcentral minnesota in november.

Years ago, my dad's foreman and I were out looking for some cattle. It was deer season, and we jumped a small herd in a brushy draw. I piled off my horse with a .30-30 and spotted a buck standing half hidden behind some brush. I decided to break his back just at the pelvis -- all I could get a clear shot at.

Just then another, larger buck stuck his head over that buck's rump. "Okay, I'll take you with a neck shot."

While we were dressing out the deer, the foreman noticed a lot of blood -- and we found the first deer with his hip smashed by my bullet.

I still have that bullet.
