Uberti vs Pietta 1851 Navy

Which is better? Ford or Chevy? I wouldn't know, I prefer Dodge. It's all completely subjective. You'll get as many opinions as there are people. In the end, you're better off handling them and seeing which one you prefer.
 
Ive expressed my sentiments on this issue often.

Ubertis steel feels vastly superior
They are finished nicer
Feel more solid

That said

I still prefer my cheaper piettas because he'll they just work. They just plain work and are readily available.

Also they are nice pistols.

The uberti looks better and feels better

But I'm a sucker for something that is cheaper and does the same job
 
I am setting here now anxiously waiting for my Uberti 1851 to arrive along with the Slixshot nipples . I also ordered a Wolff reduced power bolt spring . I am still looking for a carry rig for it . I have one for my 1858 that will probably work in the meantime .
 
Really should fix the short arbors on the Uberti's. Also just a thought on the reduced power springs... 3 or 4 Uberti's I have worked on had 3 1/2 pound main springs. They really should be at 4 lbs for reliable ignition. Some caps fire kinda intermittent under the 4 pound mark, CCI comes to mind. Also if your going to use the flat springs there is more of a chance of failure than with music wire torsion type springs.
 
I read that the reduced power springs work on the Uberti if you use the slixshot nipples . I thought for $6 dollars that I would see . I was going to change the nipples anyway . I would rather fix the short arbor than look at the billboard on the Pietta . That was my main reason for choosing the Uberti after starting this thread .
 
My main concerns about the reduced power springs is throw by, the cylinder overtraveling and not locking up. Both the bolt spring and hand spring act as a brake to help reduce the flywheel effect if the revolver is cocked fast.
 
I've been using the reduced power bolt spring on my Uberti '60 Army without any problems. The stock Uberti bolt spring is simply TOO stout and due to the late bolt rise, you'll start to see notch peening if you don't correct that (at least on my 2019 made version).

Maybe. I think that’s right.

But that’s not the whole enchilada. The billboard, certain dimensions, form, fit and finish as well. Pietta makes an 1851 that looks pretty close to original as far as I can tell. I’ve never been excited about that model from any manufacturer except Colt so I really can’t say. People used to gripe about the grip “tail” on those Piettas… but look at a few originals and something similar appears. I think most people probably want the Peacemaker grip frame on the Navy gun. Either way is probably correct.
The 1860 as made by Pietta is different from the original in quite a few different ways besides the billboard. Fit and finish used to be a bigger problem than it appears to be these days but it’s still generally “less than” Uberti standard and certainly less than Colt. They’re fine. Pietta outsells Uberti by a good margin I’ll bet. 2 to 1 probably.
Each to his own, Uberti, Colts and a lone Pietta are all I have anymore.

It wasn't the tail that was so bad. As you said plenty of original 51's had a tail. It was the flare on the front grip strap that made it look so bad. The peacemaker grip is exactly the same as the later navy grip.
 
I got my bp revolver today . It actually came yesterday , but UPS put it in my mailbox 2 miles from my house on the main road rather than delivering to my house . I just decided to check on it today . Delivery time and shipping from midway was fast . I didn’t place the order until Monday . The only negative is they messed the box all up .

The cylinder gap doesn’t look bad . I measured it not cocked and it measured .005 and less than .002 cocked .The timing looks good and it is a beautiful revolver . It fits in my 1858 holster good . EA1FEC93-D9B7-4AED-BF86-0C9DBBD4CF9B.jpeg

Drive that wedge in a little deeper and it wont have any cylinder gap. In fact the cylinder wont even turn. This must be your first bp revolver if you were expecting a nipple wrench.
 
Them things SHOULD come with a nipple wrench! Not a bad idea. But they don't. Most likely never will. If I made revolvers, they would. That's a nice looking pistola. And I mean really nice.
