If anyone is interested, I just watched the new James Bond movie "Spectre" and was pleasantly surprised to see the Vz58 featured prominently as the henchmen weapon of choice and also used by Bond himself. The best part is when he makes some quick shots up close and then flips out the folding wire stock to make a couple long range kills. It appears to be the compact submachine gun version in 556. The Vz58 rarely makes it into media so I thought it was a neat inclusion.

"Wire folding stock"
"It appears to be the compact submachine gun version in 556."
Maybe Craig is just really, really tiny, and using a VZ61?

Vz2008 update. I was having a sticky piston and figured it got bent. When a new one from century wouldn't fit I took the rifle to a smith to find out the issue. Turns out even the new piston wasn't entirely straight either, but I guess it just took some polishing and fitting to get it in and the next day I went through 200 trouble free rounds. I was just glad it wasn't a more serious and expensive problem. I also tried prone shooting at 100yds for the first time on a silhouette. I wasn't quite on target the whole time but the overall dispersion was upper body sized.

I'm having trouble understanding the bent piston issue; is it the tail that goes through the receiver that's warped and binding? Because most of the piston isn't really in contact with anything except at the head and the tail end against the carrier. That's kind of the point.

You sure there isn't a bur or misalignment in the actual receiver tunnel, or (much more likely knowing Century)that the gas block isn't slightly crooked and misaligning the front/rear supports for the piston? Not enough to keep it from working, but just making it super sensitive to any imperfection in the piston. They shouldn't be so tight that a few thou in warp or out-of-round should bind everything up.

If you think this was frustrating, just wait until your trigger starts randomly not resetting the sear :D

TCB

I told the gunsmith that was my suspicion, but he said the gas block alignment checked out. I guess I will see in perhaps another few hundred rounds if the problem comes back. I'm also curious to try an original czech made piston.

It's just weird, since it's not that hard to turn a straight piston (it's actually kind of hard to turn one that isn't). That said, I have infinite faith in the ability of gun part makers to produce defective products inferior to the forced labors of the Soviet State...

He may have just said the alignment checked out, since he could find a piston that worked, and replacing it was a whole heck of a lot easier and safer than removing, clocking, securing, and then testing a wonky gas block (can't just twist it square, since the gas port is obscured; you have to bore out the orifice in the gas block with it off the gun, then reinstall it, then up-size the crosspin holes because they will no longer line up, either)

You're far less likely to be angry with him for taking months to fix/ruin your gun and demand a refund, if the piston swap works. ;) If it works, don't question it :p

Value of VZ2008

Hey guys. Not necessarily interested in selling, but wanted to know what ya'll think my VZ-2008 is worth. Most are listed on GB at $500 or so. I know you used to be able to get them for $400 brand new but it seems like those deals are dried up.

Mine is a little special though. It has a full Bonesteel Arms hand guard set, a knurled compensator from CNC Warrior, and a FAB Defense pistol grip. Comes with 5 mags.

Any thoughts?

No thoughts? Based on my research I think I'm going to list it as an auction starting at $600. If anyone is interested shoot me a PM, I'm sure we could work something out.

PS does Century even make these anymore?

IMHO $600 is way to high for a vz2008 copy built by century with well documented issues regarding the rifle on the Internet. $600 bucks....I ask myself what can I buy on the market in the 7.62x39 platform, there's a whole lot I can choose from other than a vz2008. good luck on sale, I've seen a vz2008 on GB selling for $1200 or $1300...What The Flock

Considering it's either Czechpoint or nobody, 600$ is a bargain, anymore. The 399$ PSA deal was practically criminal, we all know it. With upgraded furniture and extra mags, a hundred or so over the going rate for a standard model isn't unreasonable. If the carrier is tabbed, even more so.

The competition is $1200 minimum, guys ;) --talk about 'I could choose other options in x39 for that money'

did you know that vz2008 barrel tends to work it's way Loose? Cross your fingers that you don't have one that does. I will post the review if I can find it. but hey just get the bolt tabbed and bingo problem solved.....are you sure, your barrel is not working its way Loose? But hey for a range toy the vz2008 will shine for its price? .but you cannot put a price when your life/family depends on it, I'd rather pay a price for a quality built vz58 from a reputable company that takes pride in build quality and with great customer service and a 5 year warranty on their vz58(Czechpoint USA)
What does century offer their customers. waiting to see century's full auto vz2008 go up against Czechpoint USA full auto.....anybody?
Let me start

OMG.....Reary, and Century has Crickets

Ifit, I've had no trouble with my barrel. I need to check to see if my carrier is tabbed. I've found some pictures I think I can compare it to.

I think you're missing the point about the value of this piece. If you can no longer get them anywhere for $400-500 then paying $600 isn't unreasonable since that seems to be about the lowest they can be had. If you personally don't feel they are quality enough weapons to justify that price then don't buy one!

9thchild...I purchased my CZ USA VZ58 back in 2008 cost me about $700 at the time. then century produced their first batch of vz2008 and did purchase one with their original bolt carrier tabbed by them. purchased from jgsales like a one week sale only $350 if memory serves me right. long story short at $350 my barrel came looking like a sewer pipe...finish on lower upper didn't match...slight surface rust, sold it to a friend years ago...frm my experience with Century Built Arms always raises a red flag for me. if you think your vz2008 is worth $600 I'd suggest you rause it to about $1k there will be buyers who know what you have and will probably talk you down in price...good luck on sale

Highly odd, seeing as the barrels are new from Green Mountain to meet 922r and barrel length. Odder still since the OEM barrels are chrome lined & generally in good shape, along with the other kit parts. Century's been known to forget barrel pins before in AKs, sounds like that was what happened. Century never tabbed many bolts, seeing as CP sued them for patent infringement (yes, that obvious solution was granted a patent somehow).

As far as finish, there's no lower to match an upper, so I'm not sure what you're describing.

The VZ2008s have a reputation as one of Century's more reliable builds, because they didn't actually build it; Century monkeys don't do mill work. All they did is assembly and apart from the usual sight base & barrel pin incompetence, the gun is hard to screw up. Neither is particularly hard to remedy. Gun finish is ugly, corners are sharper, stock is really stiff, carrier is untabbed, and the OEM parts are more worn than the CPs; that's really the only difference (oh, and many of the barrels are 308 instead of 312, but it hasn't been much of an issue since x39 doesn't operate on the ragged edge)

My earlier post when this thread started posted pics of my vz2008. I still have pics of it. I even slugged the bore long time ago and came out to be .308, as I slugged my czusa vz/barrel from original parts kit/ cugir built PSL all checked out to be .311-.312. Regardless if the monkeys don't machine things or assemble it...what matters is the facts on the Internet regarding the Vz2008 aka "Gremlin" rifle. obviously the combloc countries know how to build rifles with .311 bores and shooting .311 bullets....there's a reason. Hell maybe they tried a .308 bore and realized some issue...I don't know. But hey Century Arms probably knows better. To save cost dropped in the .308 barrel=cheaper. they probably realized it will be to expensive to properly make a .311 barrel. Maybe that's why it kicks harder than my CZ vz58....I don't know. but hey it's a VZ 58....they wont know, they'll buy buy buy...pull trigger "Click" crossing your fingers you dint get one that does, and pray to god it dont happen when your life and others depend on it.

It's a bad idea for steel core ammo, which we don't shoot much of here. Otherwise, it's a cheapout measure that shouldn't have been done, but isn't a huge deal. The added kick is because you have a slant brake on a gun that isn't front-heavy (the gun pivots about the magwell & drives the stock upward; put a more linear VZ style cap on and they're the same (well, the Century has a longer barrel barely)

TCB

Shot my D-Technik vz side by side with the vz2008 with and without the slant brake....and I move from rifle to rifle withe every shot, and still the 2008 kicks significantly harder than the D-Tech. both using same ammo, original furniture the rifles came with, WIP furniture and original wood on the 2008. I can only imagine shooting a .311-.312 bullet down a .308 barrel could ever be so tighter, all that back pressure gotta go somewhere...but I don't know.

Guys, how is vz.58 availability in your country?

Following the EU Gun Ban proposal, all hell broke lose in the Czech Republic and it is impossible to find any on store shelves. The prices are about 50% up from where they were a year ago and yet they are all sold out.

i bought a used vz2008 and took it to the range the first time, all went well for about 80 rounds then it started jamming while recharging a new round. took it home and on checking it out saw that the left side protrusion on the bolt that strips the left side cartridge out of the mag was gone, maybe do to me hitting the charging handle to set it like you would an ar15. got another bolt and took it back to the range and it seemed good down to the last to rounds in the mag. could it be the mag springs are weak or something else?

I haven't seen many VZ 58 magazines for sale lately and $17.95 each seems like a decent price.

I have no affiliation with AIM other than as a customer. I've found them to have very good CS, although their shipping is sometimes a little high.

Items that I've purchased from them in the past have always been at least as good as described and usually better.
