Waistband carry and Public Restrooms

You need a permit valid in each state, although many permits are valid in multiple states due to reciprocity. Also, some states offer "non-resident" permits that are valid in multiple states. If your home state's permit is no good, another state's non-res may be.

Some folks have two or three permits to cover the widest range of possible states.

A good, quick resource to see which state's permits are valid in a particular state is www.packing.org .

RE: Non-resident permits

Not to drift too far off topic, since there are truck stops and rest areas in most of the continental 48 states, and generally they all have public restrooms.

Utah offers a non-resident permit, available totally by mail, and honored by, IIRC, 31 or 32 other states. Check packing.org for specifics.

From Pax; Deleted a couple posts. If yours was among them, my apologies. I think this topic can be handled without ... ummm ... too much too much information.

's all good...

Smart carry holster?

I'm surprised no-one mentioned this "in the pants" holster. I have one, and though I still haven't figured out the best way to wear it (I know there's a positioning trick that makes it *really* work), it is ideal for the situation you get in a restroom. When standing at the urinal, you move it over to one side. When sitting, you slide it up towards your chest.

I have to admit though, one time I wore it driving for an extended period it was the most uncomfortable thing imaginable. I am convinced that this was operator error though, and I just couldn't get it right. The "union suit" I was wearing compounded the problem.

I too am a trucker who packs (I stay in my home state of Michigan though)

enter stall, clean seat as needed, about face, grab gun, draw & hold on to it, drop trou, sit, and place gun in underwear... do business, reverse the above process, (while remembering to wipe!) - voila, you're done!

Can't believe I'm replying to this........

Simple......take CC from waistband......place in front pocket.
Keep pants just below bend of the knee......take care of business.....

or place the pistol in my hanging jacket pocket, or, at worse, in my pants around my ankles.

Thats what I was gonna say. Love the jacket thing. I don't like just placing it on the top of the tank or in the TP holder because it may fall.
NEVER: Hang a gun on a hook by the trigger gaurd! It can cause multiple shots fired unintentionally

Alternates

Kinda surprised no one has suggested fanny packs yet. Us gun-folks probably would recognize it, but there's nothing illegal in that. And it makes it very easy to move your weapon around without alarming anyone. Most stalls have a hook you can hang a fanny pack from. Also, if you check second-hand and discount stores, you can get a cheap or used fanny pack for $3-5, and probably one that doesn't look like a gun pack. If fanny packs are too obvious for your taste, try other bags--backpacks, etc.

You may want to try ankle carry. As a trucker, you're sitting a lot of the time, so it's fairly accessible. It's even easier to access while on the pot.

if i'm wearing cargo pants or shorts, i'll button it in a cargo pocket.

if i don't have a pocket big enough to fit in, i'll just hold it in my hand, resting on my thigh. i always have a bandana in my back pocket, so i can wrap it in that if i really need to hide it.

when my dad was a trucker, he carried a S&W Chief's Special or .45 Long Colt Derringer in his vest or jacket pocket. he said in those days all the truckers did regardless of state laws. this was about 30 years ago. keeping it in a vest front pocket meant it was easy to access while sitting or standing.

he said the .38 snubbie was very popular among truckers.

I wear a cap a lot and would clip my holster to the rest-a-sured metal frame
then hang my hat on it. If there is not one then I'll just flip the band and
leave it in my pants.

Always use the toilet and not the urinal. Thats just because you have to turn your back on people for the urinal.

Second when going number 2 sit down and lower your pants to just above the knees. Spread your legs until the belt goes taut and do your business like that. Once your done clean yourself up and then go back to normal.

I opt for the waistband flip method myself. As an additional caveat, never, ever hang anything on the hook behind the door that you are not prepared to lose. It is far too easy for a thief to reach over the top of the door and grab a jacket, bag, etc.

I have an idea. Not every restroom has a jacket hook on the door, so get a suit hanger and a small bag. You can rotate the hook on the suit hanger, and hang the bag from it. put the pistol in the bag. No matter how poorly designed the restroom is, this should keep it out of site.

Or if you feel inclined to build something, you could make a box about the size of a cigar box with an open side, and some kind of hook on it. I only suggest this because as a truck driver, this is a regular part of your job, and it does need a solution.

I liked the ball cap idea too.

My recomendation is to not unholster the firearm. There is a joke there about accidents, but I digress. I wear IWB, and what I do is drop trou to just above the knee's. I then flip the holstered weapon into my pants. Drop your skivies on top to cover, sit (frankly in a truck stop I'd hover, but that just might be me) and do your business. When you've completed your transaction, reverse the steps. Easy peasy nice and easy... but for cryin' out loud, don't say that while you're in the restroom of a truck stop.:what:

Unclip holster from belt, hold gun/holster in hand.
Undo pants with other hand and drop trou.
As your butt makes contact with the toilet seat, set the gun/holster down on the inside crotch of your pants, which at this point is between your ankles.

For concealment purposes, you can keep the waistband of your pants up a little higher on your legs, like at the top of your calves.

Unless someone is looking over the top of the stall down at you, they won't be able to see the gun.

I have to agree with the earlier posts about using the waistband on your underwear to help conceal the firearm. I carry a G19 IWB at about 4 o'clock. I lower my pants to mid-thigh, then drop underwear (tactical boxer briefs), rolling waistband over grip of handgun and belt before lowering the entire assembly to ankle level. The underwear hides the weapon/mag pouches/etc and tension from the elastic helps keep the handgun vertical. Reverse the above process when finished. I think removing the weapon from your body, holstered or not, is a bad idea. Just my $.02
