Bought my first Old Army back in the '70s. Have a Berdan Sharps repo that I make my own paper cartriges for and love to shoot. Had to replace the original OA with a stainless one. Have been enjoying BP shooting for over 40 years.
Problem: bought a Walker Colt at a gun show. It is an ASM. It is old. But it is in good shape. I should have completely dissasembled the gun first thing. I didn't shoot it but didn't take it down to the last part. I was cocking the hammer and letting it down to get the feel of the timing and it bound up (crud and old cap particles). Like an idiot, I put pressure on the hammer and broke the bolt. I have bought six new bolts from six places that guaranteed me they had "original" old model ASM parts. The original bolt is just a tad longer, is heavier, the bolt sits higher, and the end of the bolt that rides the cam is in the shape of a half circle.
I have a Uberti 2nd model Dragoon and should just forget the ASM. But I can't. I keep messing around with it. Got the thing so it will cock but the timing and indexing are off and it doesn't completely lock up on full cock. I could just buy a Uberti Walker for the amount of money it will take to get this ASM beater up and running but I can't stand looking at a gun I can't shoot.
I'm not the sharpest spoon in the drawer and I know there's folks out there who know know what they are doin' - as opposed to my display of bad judgement and stupidity where this gun is concerned.
Would it be possible to replace the hammer, hand, hand spring, bolt and bolt spring with a reasonable hope of getting a safe lock up?:banghead:
