@460Shooter

With good heavily constructed bullets, and a nice long barrel to get them moving and at appropriate distances the 357 should work quite well.

We do get some monsters up here and they can disappear in the thick flora and fauna. I want something to break the shoulders down and keep them planted and a 240gr XTP will punch through both front shoulders.

...But what I am looking for is like a combat load, controllable recoil & quick acquisition to return...

I find the 45 ACP from an N frame gives me what you are seeking. I load 240 grain bullets at about 850-900 fps and am pleased with the results.

The photo includes some of the ACP models available from S&W. Two have been customized, the rest are stock. As you can see, I prefer magna stocks with a grip adapter. In my hands, the correct combination.

Of the guns you list I see no reason why the 45 Colt can't do what you are looking for. Give a 255gr LSWC a try over a stiff charge of HS-6. That have been very accurate for me and plenty of lunch with a 255gr bullet.

As for Matt Dillon, his Peacemaker was probably loaded with the 44-40 to match his levergun since the Winchester 1873 was never chambered in 45 Colt. I wish I knew which bullet and powder he used for those magic bullets lol.
