I know it has been asked a million times but here is a million and one :) I am looking for a currently produced 9mm handgun, primarily for home defense and range gun with the following criteria:

1. Must be hammer fired.

2. Can reasonably be bought for 800 or less, new.

3. Has a capacity of at least 15 rounds.

I appreciate your input. Thank you.

With the domination of striker fired handguns and your budget you are limiting yourself. Look at CZs and also FN has a hammer fired polymer gun.

Easy question. CZ75. Or if you want something smaller or plastic, one of it's many variants.

My first choice would be a Browning Hi-Power but it doesn't make your mag capacity requirement. Next choice, and another great one at that, would be a CZ75. If you want something a little more vintage, try looking for a MAB PA15.

TriStar C100 which is a Turkish made clone of the CZ75 compact. The magazine is 14+1, hammer fired, super accurate, alloy or steel frame and goes for under $400. I have two of these guns one in 9mm and the other in 380 Auto.

My bump in the night gun is a Beretta 92fs. I think I paid about $550 a year or so ago.

Hammer fired, accurate, robust, 15+1, meets your price point.

Man, there's a lot of nice 9mm's out there, and $500-$600 will get you a perfectly good one. Once you're into the $800 range you're looking more at "nice" then just good and serviceable.

I, Like you, am not a fan of striker fired pistols, and pretty much all of my "serious" pistols are hammer fired. "Nice" is very subjective, but my choices in no particular order would be:

A CPO P226

or

Find another $60 for a P30

I've never really warmed up to the CZ-75 series, although it's a decent gun, but If you are going to drop that far down the price scale look also at: (in addition to the guns mentioned up thread)

Sig SP2022
FN FNX-9
Grand Power P1 <-That thing is a sleeper. Good value.
Beretta/Stoeger Couger
Maybe a P-07 or P-09

The FNX-9 is a nice gun ... as is the CZ75B. But I'm with bannockburn, save a few more pennies and get a Browning Hi-Power.

You don't care about the controls?

You don't care if it has a manual safety and it doesn't matter where that safety is mounted or if it is disengaged by flipping it up or flipping it down?

It doesn't matter if it has an SA trigger pull or DA/SA?

In 9mm have the Beretta 92, CZ 75B, CZ 85 Combat, and Browning Hi Power. I have a very hard time finding any interest in polymer guns, so I don't presently have any. (Some of us are mentioning the Hi Power (you can get 15 round mags for them) which is possibly out of your price range unless you get a pristine used one which would be at the upper end of your price range, or a slightly less than perfect used one in the $600-$700 range.) Of these, I'd recommend you be sure to check out the CZ 85 Combat or Browning Hi Power for your stated purposes. I love the HP but I'd probably give the CZ a tiny edge in pure utility, fit/feel, and shooting enjoyment. If I were to put a 9mm on duty as a HD handgun instead of a .357 (I'm not going to do that), it'd probably be the Hi Power because it's so intuitive somehow in the way it operates for me.

If you find that you hold some special appreciation for the HP after you fondle it, that might sway your choice. Ideally you should try to shoot both (all of your candidates, actually) and see which appealed to you most. For me and my guns, the Beretta would be my last choice because I just don't find it to be in the class with the others ergonomically. Perfectly fine gun, reliable, the smoothest slide action of any (but my least favorite trigger due to the slop), accurate enough and all, but compared to how the CZs and Hi Power fits me, the 92 feels like the box that a good-fitting gun might have came in. ;) But that's why it's important to test-fire the candidates before you buy, if possible. If you can't do that, at least you need to handle them.

This thread needs pitchurs! :D

bereta 92 or taurus 92 are at the top of my list in that budget range. although I'll also highly recommend the Hi-power. talk about a comfortable gun to shoot. and higher cap mags are available for it.

I have no experience with the CZ units though - many love them as well.

This is so wide open I don't know where to begin.

My personal choice, given what you are willing to pay, would be a P226 variant.

For home and range, I cant think of a better pistol than a Beretta M9A1. Parts and accessories out the wa-zoo, it is a true war horse, and a very accurate pistol. Yeah it is a little heavy and over sized for a 9mm round, but I guess that is why mine has lasted 25 years.

I would add the Beretta Model 92, Taurus PT92, SIG P226, P228, and P229 to the list if you want to go with a DA/SA trigger design.

When you ask a question like you do you end up getting everyone's personal favorites.

There is nothing wrong with that but IMO there are a ton of excellent pistols that meet your criteria in the $400 and above price range.

My suggestion is to handle as many as you can and then hopefully actually try firing them too to see how they work out for you.

A lot depends on your preference in size as compact vs full size, metal frame or poly frame, trigger action type, external safety or no external safety, aesthetics, etc.

Good luck.

Of course, but then the alternative is to simply browse every gun seller online, read all the flyers and accumulate a bunch of cold, sterile numbers.

By asking the question here, the OP will get a good understanding of what others are buying and often why. Unlike "dumb" lists, manufacturer's hype and re-seller needs THR adds a modicum of intelligence to the basic research.

The Beretta 92's shoot good. It all but eliminates muzzle flip shooting 9mm. The one I shot had a red dot (NOT A RED DOT SIGHT) on the front sight that I didn't really like. White, 3 dot sights would be better IMO.

Beretta 92FS l had one for years. It is reliable, accurate and makes an excellent home defense gun. I only got rid of it because I wanted something a little smaller to carry. My Beretta really liked Winchester 9mm NATO 124g ammo. I used it a lot for practice ammo.

Everyone seems to overlook the poor Chiappa. It's a Beretta clone with an alloy frame. Available either 5" or 4.5" barrel. 5" upc 8053670710153 and 4.5" upc 8053670710160. Mecgar Beretta mags fit perfectly as do the Houge rubber grip panels. Quite a bargin at about $375 bucks for the 5" around here.
