What Am I Missing? Purchasing 3 Handguns

VP9, and the 686 are good choices. Gp100 too.

If it were me I'd ad either a 629 or a 460 to the list. Revolvers really do it for me.

2. a Glock 23 (.40 caliber) with a 9 mm barrel & a .357 sig barrel plus lots of 9 mm & .40 hi cap mags total cost: $650
You didn't read the OP very carefully. One of his criteria is "Must be able to purchase ban-state mags". That rules out standard capacity mags. Also, why would he get a 9mm conversion bbl for a G23 when he already owns a G19?

Beretta 92A1.

686.

Buy a 22 conversion barrel for your Sig 229. They are really nice.

Thanks. Now, I'm scheming a way to get the Beretta and the 686.

If I owned only the guns on your list, and if I could only use 10 rd mags, and if I had to buy 3 handguns, today, (with my own money!) I know what two of them would be.

1. G21
2. Ruger MkIII with ~ 4" tapered barrel. Stainless or blued? Decisions, decisions.

For door number 3, hmmm. I have a couple of 357's in my own safe. But I never shoot 'em. I would like to add the G20, but losing 50% capacity is hard to swallow. I guess it would be a G26 for the win. It holds 10 rds, anyway. :)

Does the state only allow you to have three more or are they requiring that you buy three more?:neener: Not sure I completely follow but here's my suggestions.

The HK VP9 is a fantastic handgun, really a must have IMOHO. By "ban state" I will just guess you mean 10 round not the 7 round limit of NY. I know you can get factory mags for the VP9/P30 (same mag fits both, and actually will work in the P2000 and USPc as well- no matter which HK I carry I run the same spare mag for all of them). It's a great shooter. It has replaceable Left, Right and Back panels with three of each for a total of 27 combinations- virtually everyone should be able to get a fit that feels custom made for their hand. Mine has proven to be exceptionally accurate and the trigger is about as good as a striker is likely to get (with apologies to Walther fans;)).

The Browning Hi Power is certainly a classic firearm. It's the one gun I will probably never part with. I always joke that they can just toss my BHP on top of my casket before they throw in the first shovel of dirt. Great ergonomics and very good accuracy. Mine is pretty tricked out and has a great trigger but the trigger is just okay OOTB (you would expect better for a SA auto). As much as I love the Browning Hi Power though I'm not sure it's a "necessity" anymore. It was pretty innovative six decades ago but there are a lot of good 9mms now. Certainly it's still a great firearm and if you can't have standard capacity mags I guess the BHP is not really handicapped (standard mags hold between 12 and 13 depending on your luck- IIRC the SAS spec'd just 12 rounds for reliability reasons).

I would also recommend an HK45c. It only holds 8/10 so not a big issue. Great ergos and superb reliability. I missed whether you have a CCW permit but it's a good range gun or carry gun.

A S&W686 in 357 is a no-brainer, too. Great gun. The GP100 would also be fine but as a range gun I'd take the Smith. K's and N's are both great for range use. Everyone should own a .22 pistol! The Ruger Mk III is a great little gun (I have a Mk I) but I like the Browning Buckmark a little more. A Beretta NEOS would also be nice although funky looking. The Sig Mosquito intrigues me but I hear conflicting reports on reliability.

A DA .22 revolver is also nice, and a gap in my own collection. Since I have a Ruger LCR in .38 Special I'm itching to get it in .22 LR too as a practice gun.

Lastly I can see the Beretta 92 from a historical point of view. Pretty honking bulky for CCW but as you mention range use it would be super. They're accurate guns and very reliable. Pretty big to just hold 10 rounds but such is life.

If you'll notice that link states the price on most "Standard" models is $425. They also only let you purchase the pistol upon your renewal (not initial joining) or if you join for 2 years. That's $60 put into GSSF to get the coupon, bringing the total cost up to $485. Not nearly as great of a deal unless you plan on actually shooting in GSSF.

My most recent purchase is a Beretta 92A1. I have very large hands and the Beretta 92A1 with Hogue grips fits better than any handgun I have held. It's also the sweetest shooting handgun I have shot. Very little recoil makes it easy to keep on target.

I'm in the market for 3 handguns for reasons only my state government can explain, but I'm having a hard time deciding which 3 I should purchase. As of today I own:

  • G17
  • G19
  • RIA 1911
  • Ruger SR1911
  • Sig P229 .40/357sig

What would you buy to add to the list? Here are a few I'm considering: Beretta 92A1, Ruger mk3, HK VP9, GP100 in 357, STI Trojan, Springfield 1911 RO, CZ-75, M&P9Pro, P226, BHP, S&W686 in 357. What am I missing? What would you get?

Purpose of use is: shooting targets/steel, introducing new shooters, rounding out the collection, owning history.

My only criteria for purchase:
  1. Cannot be exorbitant in price
  2. Must be able to purchase ban-state mags
  3. No exotic ammo choices.
It appears that you like redundancy in your collection, a concept I highly approve of. Two 9mm striker fired Glocks, two 1911 single action .45's. You're missing that for the Sig, so if you like it, ( I don't) I'd add the P226 you're thinking of. Then I'd add a pair of .357 wheel guns of your liking. Rather then a dedicated .22lr, I'd add a .22 upper or two (or three) in your choice for the 1911, Glock and/or Sig. There are quality .22 uppers available for all and if things with .22 ammo ever get back to normal, all would allow cheaper practice.

If you're not in love with the Sig, I'd sell it and get a pair of .357's and a pair of .22's of your choice, whether identical or similar. This would be my choice.

You do not seem to having anything small enough to carry with comfort.

I believe the OP's state is CA. We have a limited list of 'safe' firearms that we are allowed to purchase. There's currently a loophole called 'single-shot exemption' that allows you to purchase an off list handgun from a FFL as a single-shot then convert it to the original configuration after the sale. (With a magazine that has no more than 10 rounds)

That loophole gets closed in January.

CA allow only 1 handgun purchase every 30 days.

BTW, the GP100 is on the CA 'safe gun' list, so he can get that at any time if I'm correct about his situation...

For teaching I like a single action revolver .22 for the first one & especially with kids same with a rifle a bolt action .22 . I am a revolver fan> Steel revolver Have not warmed up to plastic guns as of yet. Auto loaders I have several and two are plastic . The decocker is probably one of the best features to me . If your not teaching a beginner the decocker is less important . Well IMHO Not a fan of striker fired pistols so I will leave this to someone with more knowledge.

Yet another vote for the Ruger .22. I would recomend the Mark III 22/45 rather than the regular Mark III. Try both and see which you prefer - I like the grip angle and feel better on the 22/45.

Also, unless you really like the GP100, I would recommend opting for a Security/Speed/Service six for your .357 revolver. In my opinion, the Six series looks nicer and they usually run about $100 less than the GP.

Thanks for all the thoughtful responses!

I'm just about settled on a wheel gun, a wonder-nine, and either another glock (thanks for the GSSF heads-up) and .22lr handgun. I have some time to ruminate over it as I await the permits from my local PD, but i'll figure it out.

Just to clarify, here in NJ, deep behind enemy lines, we are required to acquire a permit for every individual handgun we purchase. So I need to undergo a state background check ($20), and mental health record check, a general local PD check all before I can even earn the right to buy a permit ($2 each permit). This is good for one handgun. When I then go to buy the handgun, I undergo another background check (NICs) and have to forfeit one permit. You can only really acquire 3 permits at a time when taking into account their 90 day expiration and the 30 day wait rule, so I always go for three. Since the politicians in Trenton try to screw me by making it so tough to get a handgun, I return the favor by buying as many as I can every time I go through this unconstitutional debacle.

Also, we are limited to 15 round mags, so Beretta 92's, P226's, and Glock 19's are all easy choices. It's also the reason I considered the VP9 so early in it's product cycle.

Lastly, and I probably don't even need to say it, CCW is a pipe dream unless you're a judge, former LEO, or a jeweler who contributes heavily to political campaigns.

S&W model 41 or Ruger MII depending on what you want to spend.
Lady smith revolver to round out the .22

Given your restrictions I would buy the following:

G23:
Reason:
13 round mags, and when you convert it to 9mm you have 15 round mags.

With a G17 your not allowed 17 round mags, and must use 10 rounders.
So a smaller gun will actually allow you to INCREASE your capacity.

I'd also get .357 SIG, and 9mm barrels, as well as an advantage arms .22 conversion.

I'd also buy a 27, and do similar.

The smaller gun will take all the larger mags.

This gives you a backup, and a "deep cover" piece in a smart carry etc if yiu decide to ignore the law (NOT saying you should)

Then I'd get a wheel gun.....which keeps its brass. ;)
.357 so you can also use .38's
J or K frame if you intend to carry.
3" no lock

Or a N frame 5" fr hunting/open carry.

I know you can't carry, but you can in other states, or on pvt property.

I might switch the Smith for a .22 either a ruger MK2 or Browning Buckmark.
(personal choice, I've got both)

.357 SIG or magnum will cover black bear (loaded right) on down.

In your situation, caliber conversions and .22 conversions are ideal.

I believe you need another vote for a gp100 in .357, a s&w 642 no lock .38+p! and last but not least a MKIII .22. With this selection you will want never more....

Well maybe that's an exaggeration, but hey it's a good start.

Since you asked....

about rounding out your collection and what you are missing, clearly missing is a gun for pocket carry. Something along the lines of a M&P Bodyguard (non-laser) or a Ruger LCP or maybe something a little larger like a M&P Shield or a Sig P938.
