for PCs? For those not in the know, I am not talking about traditional first person shooters like Doom and Unreal. What are the best of the breed in the genre that contains titles like the Rainbow 6 series, SOCOM and the like?

I'll second Ghost Recon and throw a bone out for Splinter Cell. Splinter Cell is much more stealth based and requires you NOT shoot most of the time. It's hard, but it's a blast.

I'll take the dark side on this one. I like Battlefield 1942 with all the fixins'. Road to rome and Desert Combat.

Americas Army is probabily more realistic, as in you don't respawn after you die, but it can be a bore if you die early or are just learning and keep getting it.

Check out these sites Boats.

Same kind of mix for the 1942 era of the game too with weapons and vehicles.

I've been playing through the NovaLogic Delta Force games. They're pretty fun. I love the way the voxel engine models terrain. Yeah its not that pretty, but you can actually look for meaningful cover unlike some polygonal games.

the very best is Operation Flashpoint, including its various add-ons and sequels.

The Tom Clancy games are pretty good, although their outdoor environments and AI are somewhat mediocre.

Delta Force sucks. Don't even bother with it or its relatives.

I haven't played Battlefield 1942. By all accounts it is a more ambitious version of Medal of Honor, which is pretty high praise, as MoH is a great game (but not particularly realistic, alas)

I found Splinter Cell to be addicting. Trying to solve problems without making noise or being seen can teach you a lot. Ghost Recon is pretty good, but I felt that Medal of Honor was too easy and that your character could take too many hits. I'm not a fan of "health packs" anyway. MoH had an early-90's Wolfenstein feel to it, for some reason.

I agree with the Delta Force games but the most recent one, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, is really amazing. Wow! The shooting and the weapons are great. It's really a step up from the previous Delta Force games. Amazingly realistic IMHO.

America's Army, Raven Shield, Ghost Recon, Delta Force, Battlefield 1942, Metal of Honor, (soon) full spectrum Warrior, (SciFi) Planetside.

America's Army being the most realistic 'Battle' game (mulitplayer only), Raven Shield being the most realistic 'Tactical/SWAT' game.

Best thing about Americas Army is its free! Developed by DoD. I play it just about every day. :p

Not a fan of the Delta Force games.

Americas Army and Raven Shield are my current favorites. Desert Combat is great too.....but it's more about the vehicles.

Splinter Cell is great...the ballistics suck but shooting the lights out around corners is pretty cool.

So are human shields :D

Hey skunk, I loved those so much I got myself a full time human shield. Its called a 'wife'.

She refuses to use a gun to defend herself or myself within the home, so I told her she could make herself usefull by catching a few rounds while I return fire :p

Old school...

DOOM!!!

GTA Vice City has a first person mode that is unbelievably fun with the sniper rifle.

Ghost Recon kicks rump too.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a good game that is also FREE! Based on the Return to Castle Wolfenstein, it is online play only, WWII based, just came out a few months ago. It is a good way for someone to get into online play without shelling out any cash to see what it is like.

I am not a big fan of America's Army since I don't believe it should have been released to the public. It is not proper to make a game with tax dollars to compete in the marketplace. Plus IMO it takes too long to reload the M16 :D

i havent resumed playing Delta Force: BHD, theres a couple missions that have replay value (with sniper rifle), but the AI is horribly stupid and very inconsistant. if you dont see whos shooting at you, you die quick. if you do see them, you can dance through their shots and survive.

i'm addicted to MOHAA. i just joined the {DieS} group, we play omaha beach exclusively, with an occasional theme weekend. rifles only, cant drop your weapon and pick up the enemys, cant cheat, only get 8 rounds of pistol ammo and 1 grenade. friendly fire is off.
it isnt the perfect FPS, the m1 garand is inaccurate and has no lethality. can rarely get a one shot stop, but the mauser gets one shot kills all the time.
anyone wants to drop by, look for 'alous' in the server name descriptions.

Quake 3 has a mod called urban terror www.urbanterror.net

Cool selection of weapons, maps and the body placement hits create more realistic wounding, broken legs, instant kill headshots etc...

I have also played the delta force games and found them entertaining.

Desert combat for BF1942 is still my current favorite.

Unreal tournament 2003 shows quite a bit of promise espescially when the current day mods become available

I only have the demo so I had not played enough to notice that. Isn't that kind of how it is in real life though? If someone has an unimpeded shot on you and you don't see them they can easily pick you off. Much harder if you see them and start ducking and dodging. Maybe I'm just not understanding the extent to which this occurs in the game. Again I've only played the short demo level.

I used to like Duke Nukem, which actually helps with things such as pieing the corner and so on. I don't have many computer games, but my recent acquisition is SWAT 3, which is almost too real for me. I think my blood pressure goes up to dangerous levels.

But nothin' beats Counterstrike for visceral team action. Get a good team of buddies together and you'll be unstoppable!

Here is a few for you Tactical Guys to try out:

NO ONE LIVES FOREVER II

Probably the most FUN shooter you will ever play. A little silly at times, since it pokes fun at James Bond... but it's a great shooter.

RETURN TO WOLFENSTEIN

WWII setting... challenging... and a lot of fun. I'm loving the spooky crypt levels. Scary.

CLIVE BARKER'S UNDYING

Scary game, good shooter, and good story. One of the most enjoyable shooters I've ever played next to NOLF2. Play this one at night and in the dark... with headphones or good stereo speakers turned up. One level was just about cleared... but the music was so spooky I got so creeped out I had to stop for the night. I want Clive to make another one like this. I'd pay full retail for it. http://www.madogre.com/Interviews/undying.htm

ALIENS VS PREDATOR II - SINGLE PLAYER MARINE MISSIONS

Another scary game. It's worth the full retail price just for these marine missions. The atmosphere is intense, heavy, dark, brooding, creepy, and flat out scary as hell. I love this game. Your mission starts out getting to a "shake and bake" colony on LV1201, a planet not unlike LV426. This is a lot like the same thing that went down on LV426 in the movie “Aliens†except you arrive a lot earlier… some of the fighting is still going on just as your getting to it. You end up separated and alone in a dark and damp complex. Alone in the dark. Your motion tracker picks up bits of movement all around you… you can hear screams… you can see dripping blood… you catch glimpses of screaming bodies getting pulled into vents… you get scared. You get spooked. And you haven’t even seen an alien yet.
You catch a glimpse of some sort of alien, a “Predator†that throws a body at you… you see explosions and hear an alien roar. Your heart is racing and your looking all over the place just scared as hell. When you finally see an Alien, it is up close and personal… they are fast. Your getting attacked before you realize there is a threat. The M41A Pulse Rifle is your best friend… but remember… Short Controlled Bursts.
This seems simple enough… at first.
Then they come out. When they come out… all your doing is scrambling backwards firing full auto and spraying everything. Get them off me! Even if you kill the creature – it’s blood scalds you badly… you feel the pain… you want to scream but the scream is held in check by the fear.
Your mom was wrong… There IS such things as monsters.
These monsters are bad... unclean and unfriendly. But they are very happy to see you. If you defeat an Alien in your encounter, you live long enough to bump into the next one... until they win. If your lucky, they will only kill you. If you are unfortunate enough to survive an encounter with them they will violate you in such a horrible way as to make prison gang rape look inviting... they impregnate you with a little monster that gestates and grows inside you and then eats its way out... You will die. Painfully. Giving birth to yet another of the creatures that killed you and all your friends. Nice huh?
And those are the stupid ones.

If you can't tell...
I'm loving the scary FPS games. The scarier the better. The more emersive the better.
Do you guys know of any other scary FPS games for the PC? Don't give me that Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil crap. First Person... not 3rd. DOOM 3 is supposed to be scary.
I'd like a FPS Roll Playing game... Kinda like Morrowind but with guns and graphics that don't cause your computer to smoke and overheat with huge empty open spaces and no idea which way to go... Like make NWN a scary as hell FPS... that is what I want.
