What considered all around good AK47

Updated order - purchased 2... I hope I can pick better one and sell other one, J&G sales give a break if 2x purchased...

Picked up WASR's today. I got 2 so I can pick better one. What can I say?
1. No canted sights. At least I don't see it.
2. No shavings or dirt inside. Barrels were little dirty, there was some cosmo on bolt but nothing bad.
3. Wood is OK. It's a plain wood. Not finished or anything. I really didn't like plywood on old WASR's (on pictures) and I was going to refinish anyway. New unfinished wood it perfect for me. Some sanding/stain/wipeon poly and I will have it just like I want it.
4. Everything is tight, nothing wobbles. Except for mags of course. It doesn't bother me at all, I see what it is and I'm not sure what everybody so upset about.

Serial number all matching on both. Except for rear sight scratched no doesn't match rest of the gun.

Overall they look good and better then I expected. I'm going to shoot them both to see if I like one better but right now I don't have clear preference. Both straight...

I will keep one as is and will work some stuff on other:
1. trigger job just to smooth it up.
2. Wood.
3. Maybe some polishing on rails and around corners to make action smoother.

Probably together with bakelite grip? I don't know, I really like it as it is right now. Just need to figure out which one going to be mine and finish wood and work on action..

With the G2 trigger, I am not sure what your going to improve, to be honest. Actually let me rephrase: I am not sure that your going to improve it enough to notice an improvement. Not that it instate perfect trigger, but it is a pretty darn good one considering the gun it's in and the historically awful triggers that WASR's were known for.

If I were getting my first AK today, I would probably buy this one:

Good price + Hammer-forged chrome lined barrel + made in a NATO country familiar with manufacturing AK47s = winner to me.

I have no idea why people are so fascinated with milled AK-47s. It is just a more expensive unnecessary process to get an inferior (heavier) product. You could mill the blade of a shovel too, it wouldn't make the shovel any better.

I agree, trigger is good. All I need is to smooth it out so there is no grittiness. It's not going to make huge difference but why not

Many people recommend Arsenal SLR-107. I like folding stock, etc. Are those rifles significantly better?
I looked over used SAM7SF. It was better than Poly Tech Legend and significantly better than anything new under $1000. The price was $1050 which was very reasonable for one in excellent condition.

No way the SAM7 is better than a legend. That is the reply of someone who doesnt own them. I have the SAM7 Classic fixed and Underfolder, plus i have all 3 of the Legends. The Chicoms are much better fit and finish compared to any Arsenal (even when they were Bulgarian made). The SAMs are excellent, but not to the point the Legends achieved.

The one I looked at with nice side folding tube stock, for otic rail, thumb actuated safety would squeeze by Chinese made Legend with ease. I bet in hands of an expert shot it would produce tighter cluster of holes too.
While some milled Arsenals I have seen were lesser than the "Chinese Cadillac" this particular one wasn't so.

regarding improving the trigger

Replace the trigger spring! Carolina Shooter Supply sells a $7 replacement called JTE Performance spring. This WILL lighten and smooth the trigger and I doubt you will need to do any polishing at all on that G2 group with this spring installed. Check out their video on it:

You can also consider an internal recoil buffer made by Power Custom to quiet the action when the bolt cycles:

Enjoy!

my brother picked up a wasr at j&gs a few weeks ago. good fit and finish, tight mag well, good trigger, no malfuntions, shoots accurate enough (i only ran one mag through the gun). bloodied the back of my thumb on the stock (wider than the back of the reciever), but fixable with a file or shooting gloves. the unfinished furniture has possibilities.

i give it two thumbs (one bloodied) up!

Yep. It's great!

Trigger is GOOD. I have no problem with weight and pull. It's just parts cast or MIM and there is some grittiness to it. All I want is to smooth/polish those surfaces. Nothing else

smoothing a trigger can be done with a bunch of rounds down range (fun, too). you may want to try that first.

I have tried Saigas and own an Arsenal and have fired Finnish RK's during service and thereafter.

Finnish RK's legendary accuracy is because of the sights and the Lapua ammo. Trigger is always guesswork. My Arsenal has stock trigger that is better than any RK or milspec-AR trigger I have ever encountered.

I'd get a .223 Saiga if I was buying now.

My friend already taking it.. I didn't have chance to go to the range to decide which one I keep for myself..

One needs to compare couple specimens side by side. I compared SAM7SF to IZHMASH MK03. While Russian piece had riveted receiver it was very, very sooth and G2 trigger was just as good as Arsenal one. Given choice I would take the MK03 because it cost $300 less and the gun was lighter in weight. The IZHMASH was proofed in 2006.

Sometimes it is just about pride of ownership, a quality feel, tactile rewards. My son has a Savage Axis 2. It has a cheap plastic (not fiberglass) stock, and it shoots 3/4 MOA groups. It also weighs a svelte 6lbs. I still prefer shooting about a dozen rifles in my safe more than that one.

The same is true for my milled A/K's. They have pretty furniture, and are scratch free. I'm just particular that way.
