What did you shoot today?

tominboise:

Shooting in the cold is one thing. I jogged many dozens of times on crew layovers in the Upper Midwest in wintertime (from 1986 to retirement in 2017) if wind wasn't too bad with a subzero F temp.
Two ski caps, thick gloves, sometimes jogging in blue jeans under plastic warm-ups.

But was it very windy up there in Idaho?🥶

Yep, it sure is - at least in this part (the SE part) of the state. We have a saying here: "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes. It will change." However, the wind only changes in direction and velocity - it hardly ever goes away.
On the other hand, I grew up in the Boise Valley in SW Idaho. We had wind over there too, but it wasn't like here which is almost every day.
There was a lot more fog in the winter over there than we have here too. And it's a lot hotter in the summer there than it is here. That's one of the reasons why the Boise Valley is developing quite the reputation for producing fine wines. Summer isn't long enough, and it doesn't get hot enough here in eastern Idaho to grow grapes. As you've probably heard, we mostly grow potatoes here. ;)
Just to keep this gun related though - there's a lot of places to go shooting around here, and you don't have to pay or be a member of some kind of shooting range. Just this morning as I was goofing around on THR, I could hear a gun going off over near the Portneuf River (about a half-mile away). I figured somebody around here got a new gun for Christmas. It did my heart good to hear it. :)

Excellent.
Were it not for my son and his two kids living here (and far too much house stuff to move), I would like to live up there. My wife would hide from the cold.

And so many places to shoot out there; my pair of FALs 🇧🇷 plus PTR-91🇺🇲 (very reliable from nib, 1,100 rds.), S.A. M1A🇺🇲 and Czechpoint VZ-58.🇨🇿

New job this year. Part time...only 40 hours a week. Monday thru Thursday 10 hour days. Soooo...more range time and more holiday days off!

Fusion 1911 with the 40 S&W slide. 140 grain MBC coated lead using Sport Pistol. Likes it a lot.

Mosin Nagant M38 using some 170 grain Gardner's Cache cast bullits and Trail Boss. Also fired some Hungarian? heavy ball surplus. Note to self....shoot the surplus first then the cast and the recoil won't feel so bad.

I shot my new-to-me 10/22 with a couple of different loads. It likes CCI-SV a lot as you can tell from the group. It doesn't like Federal 550 pack. I was getting double feeds and misfires so I put that box up. I also shot Norma Tac 22 and a box of Blazers. Both with no failures.

Not today but this past week at Deer Camp. I shot my custom Remington 40X in 308. Lapua brass, Federal Large Rifle Match Primer, IMR 4064 and both Berger 168 grain VLD Hunting bullets and Sierra 150 grain ProHunters. Our after Christmas 3 day season is usually pretty laid back and some of us were playing around at the club's private range. Stuff like hitting a postage stamp size target with the first shot from a cold bore, bets on smallest group, ect. Most of us also shot our CCW pistols.

Shot my Ruger SFAR with the new Banish 30 suppressor and my first rifle reloads since 1993 when I used to load with a guy who would walk me through every step. This time, I was flying solo.

I loaded three sets of 5 each .308 Win, 15 total rounds. Sierra Game King 165’s. VV N140 with 40.5, 41.0, and 41.5 grains respectively. I was hoping it would be as good as factory stuff…so I had low expectations.

This is the 5 X 5 round groups at 50 yards, from a makeshift rest. Top group is Milsurp 147 gr that’s probably from the 80’s. Middle left is PPU 168gr Match. Middle right is my reload w/ 40.5 grains powder. Bottom left is 41.0, and bottom right is 41.5. I was pretty freaking shocked with the results:

I’m probably gonna go with the 41.5 gr load since the Dillon is still set up for that one. I am pretty happy with this.

Both of these used by Manca; Czech-made🇨🇿 and assembled VZ-58 and PTR-91.
These people are regular citizens (Non-LEOs etc) in Slovenia🇸🇮 with various semi-auto centerfire rifles. Here, Manca shoots both right and left-handed.

My PTR-91 "Classic GI" (18" barrel, no rail) is a clone of their made-in-Germany 🇩🇪 HK-91. They might have too much oil in their 'buffer tube''.: small bruises on her shoulder.
Most of you prefer watching her (?) with a gun instead of some dude, or a still photo.

👩Sofilein appears with the G3 in Select-Fire o_O at 10:18. ---Sidenote: Sofilein is a bit of an expert on WW2 tanks. She has a channel.

If you find that the semi-auto recoil in an HK or PTR-91 is overly uncomfy compared to what it normally is, Or to other .308 'battle rifles', HK armorer Jesse explains at 13:12 what too much oil drained (via gravity) into the Buffer Tube often does to felt recoil. Many of you can imagine what the solution is, although the butt disassembly seems tedious.
He shows us, at 15:02, what the bolt carrier (he says the bolt) slams against- an outer, visible "stud" of the buffer tube. Too much oil can collect behind/below this.

Took the FN 1922 out yesterday and it ran perfectly after I bent in the magazine feed lips, which were too wide before and causing feeding jams. Also took the S&W Safety Hammerless and fired about 30 rounds of .38 S&W. Both guns shoot well. The FN in .32 ACP is a lot of fun to shoot. Virtually no recoil or muzzle flip.

Went down to the range behind the barn yesterday...

...to run some 357 Mag over the speed-checker thingie. The round brown target on the right side of the berm is my 5-gal bucket bullet trap.

An H&R 357 Mag carbine, and a (very) well-used Ruger Security-Six

The H&R is sporting a Banish 45 multi-caliber can, and a cheap Taiwan 4x scope.

The Ruser is my standard test-mule. I purchased it perhaps 15 years ago. It's been carried extensively, but I have no idea how much it's been fired. I don't have much in it, and if it blows up (unlikely) I'm not out much.

In case anyone cares, the load was a home-cast 358-156. Tac lube, copper check. 9.3gr HS-6, CCI #550 SPM, R-P brass.
Speed checked 10' from muzzle.
15 rounds in the 4" Ruger gave me 1191 fps, ES 77 fps, SD 22.8
9 rounds in the H&R (one didn't register) - 1504 fps, ES 21 fps, SD 28.6

Took my Swedish rifles out for a family get together, along my Swiss K31 and my Marlin 1895 to let my friend shoot some Buffalo Bore. I gave it 1 shot and put it away.

The Ljungman shots very nice and rather soft recoiling. Now I really wanna get it's Egyptian cousins. Used GP11 ammo with the Swiss, definitely more accurate that PPU ammo.

Beautiful Swiss and Swedes!

If I already had a Ljungman, Id pass on the Hakim. My Dad has one and its not all that and a bag of chips.

I tried out some of my handloads in my old Husqvarna 9.3X62. They are hammers!

286gr Hornady Interlocks traveling at about 2,500 FPS got my attention from my 6 3/4 pound rifle. The scope gets removed for initial test shots, looking for pressure signs. Then, it goes back on for any corrections needed for the load. The rifle still has the factory plastic buttplate. o_O

New England Westinghouse (Finn rework) Mosin M91 amongst other guns. The top 2 were AP heavy ball handloads over 45gr. milsurp powder. The 2 rounds in the head. Actually aiming directly in center mass, so about a foot high at 100. The taped holes are FR8 with copper wash 147gr Chinasports .308 (that stuff is all over the place and stinks like rotten eggs when you shoot it). IMG_0880.jpeg
