K guys. Sorry for the late response, but the question was responded to with "A rifle is a gun. When on TV, you see soldiers in Iraq, the black guns they are carrying are rifles."

Then the question was answered. That's what school is for. Learning.

As for her not knowing what a rifle is, I'm almost 60 and I still don't know what "apps" are.

SAME HERE! I have read Of Mice & Men and its a great book and in NH in the small town lots of people know what a rifle basicly is and a city probally would be different or the families might not like guns?

Interesting response to the question. I did notice the "black" being added. Black usually means "bad". I guess the pink ones are "good".

If a student asks a reasonable question, it should be answered in non-political terms.

maybe if the word rifle was pre-ceeded by the word "assault" , then she would have HAD to heard that conjunction mentioned on the news before,, maybe that kid isint allowed to watch the news ?

Not knowing what a rifle is follows along the same lines as this that has been around for a while. When asked where that came from, the "vegetarian" girl while eating a hamburger said "from a package in the grocery store". A complete disconnect in some places IMHO.

Never would have happened at my school. We had a MANDATORY gun safety / hunters education class for all 7th graders put on by the conservation department.

Ironclad, that sounds like a good school to me, and personlly i think the whats a rifle question was for attention, as you can see.......it worked.

I've seen kids in the 4th grade that did not know what a scarecrow was.
