You should see the Emerson quick-open feature

If you haven't handled the Emersons, you should definitely
give them a thought. They have a very slick nock on their
exposed blade-back that purposely snags briefly on any pocket
edge when you pull the knife out, and causes the blade to
snap open faster than if it were a switchblade. Their site
has videos of it, and it works really well:

Buy an Atwood Prybaby and don't use a $200 knife for prying with.

Anything by Emerson would be excellent. Another good choice would be the Spyderco Waved Endura. The Chinook III is an awesome knife also. Best thing to do is go to a show and handle as many knives as you can. There are a lot of great knives out there, but you won't know which one is best for you until you handle it.

I carry an old REKAT, but that company is defunct. If I was looking for one now, I'd probably get a Benchmade Axis lock, or a Spyderco Delica or Endura, depending on the size and amount of money I wanted to spend. The main thing to remember about a duty blade is that you will probably lose it at some point, so you need to figure cost into it. (So why do I carry a REKAT? Because I don't follow my own advice.)

My off-duty EDC knife is a Spyderco Calypso Jr. It seems to be the ideal balance between everything required of an inoffensive light-use knife. For heavier tasks I have non-folding knives, or proper tools. I would not feel unprepared carrying the Calypso on duty, but it's probably on the light side for duty use.

I'm a big fan of Atwood's various pry/bugout tools (got a prybaby myself :D). I think one of the Bugouts would fit what you need very well and with "style".

On the other hand, there's no need to spend that much money on a custom knife/tool when the CRKT MAK-1 that Exmasonite pointed you to or the even less expensive small pry bars that John pointed out are readily available.

You could get either the MAK-1 or a simple small 7" pry bar and spend the rest of the money on a very good folder/fixed blade that you could dedicate to SD/retention.

thanks hso for posting about atwoods stuff, now im hooked and must have one/some! and of course, now i cant get em... :banghead:

I would reccomend a 5" Cold Steel Voyager with a plain edge. I use one everyday and enjoy it very much.

I carry a Benchmade 943 Osborne the plaine clip point version...not serrated or tanto....I like plain blades....this one will takes two deer apart and deboned between sharpenings. Once you use the axis lock you will never go back to a liner lock knife.

Atwood Prybaby is good kit.

I have one on my keyring. One of my coworkers was making fun of me until I opened his beer for him. "Oooooh, it's a bottle opener, too? OK. That's better."

Priorities :D

just scored an atwood keyton and prybaby XL on ebay, sweet. well, the cost over retail wasnt sweet. still looking for a bug out blade (or mini), son of prything (or mini), and titanium bug out bar (or not Ti, or mini/micro).

also got in my order for a Utility Razel! went for CPM 154CM, black g10 handles with blue liner. orders are now available/being taken by graham knives for razels, get in there quick! sites been down today though, maybe gettin slammed? dunno.

To save time I just copied this from another post I recently made...

You seriously need to check out a waved Emerson knife. Here's a few of mine:

My Commander:

My Super CQC-7 (the Super has a 4" blade, normal '7 has a 3.3" blade):

The little hook above the thumb stud is the wave. It catches your pocket as you draw it out and snaps the blade open in an instant. It appears that you have a fixed blade knife in your pants pocket, it opens so quickly. The best part is that there is no mechanism that opens the blade so there's no question that it isn't an "auto" technically. All Emersons are razor sharp, I especially like the chisel ground tanto CQC-7.

Definately try one! A CQC-7 can be had for $130 shipped from knifeworks:

Oops that link is to the non-waved version, here's the proper one:

Spyderco makes a waved endura, my wife carries one, it's razor sharp and a good knife too:

I prefer G10 handles so I like my Emersons more. Try one out!

man youre really pimping out the emersons lol :)

(its ok, im thinking about adding a cqc-15 and maybe a super karambit to my hd-7)

man youre really pimping out the emersons lol

I wanted a commander since the late '90s but didn't have the money for one. My wife got me one as a surprise (along with a Combat Karambit!) a few weeks ago and I can't believe how long I waited. Now I have the Karambit, Commander, Super CQC-7, and my regular CQC-7 comes tomorrow. The handles are perfect, the locks are tight, blades shaving sharp, grinds unique, and the wave is amazing.

I'm not "pimping", just being honest :)

Spydie milli. except that I would not get any serrations at all, they are over rated and a nuisance

Wheelgunner, once the blade is out try putting your thumb forward of the ramp and watch how much more of your hand is around the knife.

I carry the EKI Kerambit on my reaction side, reverse grip.

This is the best products on the market........Peroid!

Checked those out , felt like I was gripping a street brick , very blocky and not something I would want to have to use for an extended period of time.

There is no " best knife " , there are only knives better suited for certain tasks. well , there is always Dork Ops ;)

I've been carrying a Benchmade 730 everyday for several years now and I have abused that knife quite a bit. Light prying, cutting wire, sod, wood, meat, vegatables, rope, pretty much anything you would think to cut with a knife and some things you wouldn't The worst that has happened to it is that the original black teflon coating is worn off of it in many spots and the g10 scales sport a few small chips (it was never meant to act as a hammer but sometimes you have to improvise). The edge is still great and the axis lock has never failed me. Unfortunately they don't make the 730 anymore but I've picked up a 710 to carry while I send my 730 back to them for a tune up (the lifesharp service is free, you just have to cover shipping) and the new 710 in D2 tool steel, looks to be everything the 730 is in reliability and toughness, if not more so.

I can't think of a better knife for extended carry in any situation than a Benchmade axis lock in the blade design and material of your choice.

spyderco endura may meet your requirements.

relatively inexpensive, very durable, plain partial or full serrations, 3.25"
VG-10. You could even get the Emerson Wave version if you were so inclined.
