What guns have you sold/got rid of, and why?

1) 30-06 converted Mauser. It tended to have a sticky bolt and primers came out of the casings way to frequently for comfort. Printed 1" at a 100yds though...
2) SCCY CPX2. Had a pin that backed out, and it nose dived cheap 115gr hollow points, slammed 'em right in to the feed ramp. Wasn't pleased.
3) Henry 22lr mares leg. Useless. Like...seriously, what'd you do with one?
4) Glock 23. Getting out of 40s&w due to ammo availability issues.
5) Mossberg 702. Lack of 22lr. Regret getting rid of it though honestly.
6) Anderson + New Frontier Armory AR15. Castle nut backed off on the receiver extension. Sold it within the week.
7) Heritage Rough Rider 22lr/22mag. Wasn't impressed with the plastic pieces, and the hammer started to peen from hitting the firing pin. Not cool.

My first handgun was a very nice Rossi 851 , 38 special 4" stainless. Looked like a S&W 15 with a Colt like vented rib. I was crazy about it , so I found and bought a snub nose jframe Rossi knock off. Good little gun. Then I sent for a matching snub , but in stainless. The stainless snub seized up first day on the range. Seller offered me credit towards m36 Chief in nickel. YES!!! Then the blued Rossi snub began to misfire. Couldn't locate a firing pin - seller from months back offered me full credit on a new SP101 -YES!!!
Then I sold the good looking 4" due loss of faith in the brand.

That is what I sold and why.

I've sold 2.

The first was a High Standard Dura-matic. I didn't like the way the rounds fed ththough it. Did a fair amount of adjustment to the magazine and got the rounds to feed, but ultimately decided the design or condition of the magazine was too week for my satisfaction. I replaced it with a Ruger Mk. III Hunter and am not unhappy with the decision.

The second was a 10/22 with a SS barrel. I had a friend that wanted it and I ran across a take-down 10/22 with the SS barrel, flash hider and camo stock that I wanted so I made the switch.

Yes, I've let a few go, and my wife usually hates it. (I'm pretty lucky.)
The S&W Bodyguard with the 100# trigger pull that previous poster's have mentioned. Sold it and bought the wife a Sig 238 which she loves.
A Colt 1908 Vest pocket that came as a package deal with a 1903 Hammer. The more I sold '08 for, the less I actually paid for the '03.
The one that keeps bugging me? I sold my first muzzloader; a Dixie flint Tennessee Mountain rifle that I did very well on. About a month later I saw it on GunBroker being sold 4 states away for $150.00 more than I sold it for. @#$%!

1. KelTec P3AT. Not reliable, I'm not willing to finish production on a gun to hope it works properly. Too many failures, sold it.

2. KelTec P32. Followed the P3AT because I was too turned off by the P3AT's unreliability to go down that road with another cheapie.

3. Glock 30SF. I listened to the apologists who said the reputation of this as a problem model was overblown internet hype. It would not reliably feed JHP, even after a trip back to Glock in an attempt to fix the problem. The second time I told them to swap it or a G21SF, move my aftermarket night sights over to the new gun, and swap the two extra mags I had purchased for G21 mags. They did and the 21 was pefect.

Tikka T3 Stainless Lite .270. Bought it to hunt farm country, offer fell through and gun season here is insane. No use for it.

Sig Sauer P938. Fell for all the hype and thought the mini 1911 was cool. Horrible horrible trigger, even with no plastic it was snappy and uncomfortable. Ditched it and got a real 1911.

Thinking about getting rid of my SKS and buying a reloading setup. Never shoot it and have no love no non american milsurps.

Thank you everybody for your replies what a wealth of information you've all provided. I'm enjoying going through and reading each comment and why a gun just didn't work out for you.

Stoeger coach gun. Bought nib. Didn't like how it felt.
Marlin 336 30/30. Bought nib. Didn't like how it felt. Already had a Winchester 94.
Mossberg 500s. Bought a bucket of them. How many do I need? Sold extras.
Smith & Wesson 10-5 almost nib. Needed money.
Sig P6s. Bought a big pile to get the nicest one. Sold rest.
Sig mosquito. Should have listened to the reviewers. Hated it.
Enfield 303 rifle. Family member wanted it.
Smith & Wesson Sigma 9mm. Friend needed a handgun and didn't have much cash.

Reason for selling a German WWII Gewehr 98 8mm Mauser that someone brought back from Europe as a trophy and gave to me: STUPIDITY

Reason for selling a S&W M&P 9mm: Transitioning to all 1911 format pistols; used $$ to buy an RIA .40 S&W Commander size 1911.

I don't have any idea how many. Some because I got tired of them. Some because I needed the money. Some to just empty out the safe and take some load off the shelf. None because "they didn't work out for me."

They're just guns. I don't get emotionally attached to them. There's always another one in the case tomorrow.

I only really wish I hadn't sold one of them. Back about 77/78 or so I bought a really nice little AYA 20 ga double from Sears-Roebuck. Man, I wish I still had that gun. I'd hate to think what one of them would cost today.

Lets see. When the old man passed I sold off all his old firearms of varying quality. It came to over 30. Why? I wanted nothing he had and did not want any reminders, long story. I bought what I wanted. Later sold a Ruger Super Redhawk to fund a S&W 329PD. Later sold Marlin 38SPL lever and 45/70 to fund 2 264LBC builds. Lastly I sold 2 CX4 storms, a Ruger 77MKII 338wm and a 458 SOCOM upper to fund 3 suppressors and 2 SBRs with tax stamps. If I sell a gun it is to buy another but I don't always sell one to buy one.

Couple of Yugo 8mm Mausers. Decent enough guns, but I have guns that are better, so they never got shot.

Finnish Mosin M39 on an 1898 Tula receiver. Neat old gun, with unique history and legal status. Just never shot it. Just after I sold it, the local Mosin club started allowing Finns. Oh well.

Rossi 22/20 gauge. Thought the 20 gauge would be fun for the grandkids. That thing had NASTY recoil. Nobody would shoot it a second time. Including the adults.

Mosin M44. Never shot it, and had a good friend who seriously needed a bolt action rifle and had no money. So I gave it to him. Impressive muzzle flash, though.

I'm at an age where it sounds sensible to me to reduce to the basics in terms of handguns. With that in mind I just sold my S&W 640 because it is too heavy for concealed carry as compared to what I kept, the 642 (and I never fired magnums anyway because it is too painful!), I also just sold my Browning Buckmark, mainly because when I shoot 22LR I prefer my S&W 617 10-round revolver, and the Buckmark fairly frequently would be extremely hard to pull the slide back (the Browning people told me that this is normal for this gun and to just leave it with the slide locked open after firing, but that isn't always practical).

I may visit some local gun stores and see what I get offered for a few more guns, and get myself down to the basic six: two large capacity semi autos for home defense, two different concealed carry guns, so that even if one needs work I always have one to carry, the 617 for target shooting and plinking, and my never-to-be-sold S&W Model 19 4-inch nickel 357 Magnum that is, in my opinion, the best looking gun I have ever seen or held and the only gun that I own that has sentimental value.

I traded my SP2022 and cash for a P226.
I sold my Walther PPX because I had two.
I traded my Tisas 1911 A2 for a Sig Sauer P320 in 45, but I ended up buying the Tisas back.
I sold my Canik TP9 because I bought the TP9v2.

Since I began buying guns and shooting I've always come across threads where people have regretted selling one gun or another.

Since I would hate regretting selling one gun or another I have never sold any of my guns.

I don't have a huge collection but it's certainly over a dozen.

.
Just one.

Whereas I shoot my Models 1892 in .357 and .44 magnums to my current-level satisfaction and beyond, I had a gorgeous! 1922 Win Model '94 SRC in .30WCF that I could not hit a barn with... after much deliberation (should I encase it and lag it to the wall studs as an art object to admire?) just earlier this year I presented it to my gun dealer where I received a far more generous offer than I had expected. I rolled that cash into a nice Model 60-15 I'd had my eye on for awhile...

The only gun I have ever sold was a Marlin 1894 lever action in 44 mag. It was a newer "Remlin".

In spit of what you hear about those, the fit and finish were excellent and the action was extremely smooth out of the box. With jacketed ammo, it was a tack driver too.

The problem I had is that I shoot lead almost exclusively and it couldn't shoot accurate lead bullets regardless of diameter or load. Ironically enough, it had ballard rifling and not the much aligned for lead bullets Micro-Groove.

The guy I sold it to was a younger guy looking for a good deal on one. He knew the pitfalls but, for the price I sold it for, he was happy to have it.

Sold a Bersa Thunder .380 that stovepiped every fifth round like clockwork.

Bought a police trade in S&W 6906

Sold a Taurus PT101p .40S&W to get a Beretta 92A1.

I liked that Taurus, very nice gun for $299 but the Beretta is even better.

  • I sold a bolt .223 unfired, mostly because I decided I wanted a gun with a heavier barrel among other things. Replaced with something more to my liking about a year later. Lost a bit of cash overall, but I am happier than I probably would have been.
  • I also traded a Beretta 21A (pocket .22) and some cash for a 12 gauge. The Beretta was finicky, and between that and the pitiful dent I saw when I shot a 55 gallon drum at close range I lost confidence in it.
  • I also had a dog of a .22 revolver way back when. Some no-name gun. Looked like just the thing on the gun show table, but unreliable to the point of nearly useless. Got a loan on it at the Evil Pawn Shop™ and never went back for it.

That's it. I used to be one of those never-sell-anything people, but my stance has relaxed a little as the years have gone by. I still don't like to sell, especially if it works fine. But I do have a few that I would be willing to part with as trade bait if it came down to it.

Only handgun I've sold that I truly regret selling is one of my snubby (2.5" barrel) S&W Model 66s, a 66-4 with a tuned trigger. What was I thinking?

I've sold off a few pistols that didn't quite work for me, but a couple I regret (a Colt's 1911 Officer's Model that was perfect but I felt I needed something else more), a nice SA Mil-Spec and a couple other 1911s that I kind've miss now ... And why, oh why, did I sell off a beautiful S&W Model 19-4 4"?

So, pretty much, the only guns I really regret selling were S&W revolvers or 1911s ... and the only reason I have for ever selling ANY guns is that at the time, I felt there was something I wanted more ...

Sold a few for good reasons. Sold too many because, for a time, my interests shifted from guns and shooting to jeeps and off roading.

870 express super mag synthetic (not much use for. I have an auto and a o/u for my shotgun needs)
Moss berg 500 (ditto above)

Hi point 995 (jeep. Regret.)
S&W m&p 40 (traded on next...)
Beretta 92 (traded when I decided I needed a 1911)
DPMS classic 16 (tired of fixed a2 style sights on m4 sized rifle)
Bushmaster predator (jeep)
Marlin 917 (jeep. Eventually filled hole with a 17 savage though)
Smith 629 (jeep. Recently filled big bore niche with a super redhawk)
Savage heavy barrel bolt 22 (jeep? Miss it. Likely to be replaced in near future)
WASR AK (novelty wore off. Later bought a saiga and built my way)

Probably at least a couple more I'm missing...
