Trying to make a fun thread here.

Everyone has their own idea of what an AK/SKS should look like (furniture), shoot like, and how it should accept magazine, accessories, and everything else!

Generally, those are the topics each AK or SKS thread covers. But what I want everyone to ask themselves:

What's something *new* that should be done to the AK or SKS? Perhaps an adapter to accept 7.62x39 AR magazines (think fun here!)? Maybe an adapter/method to attach a forward handguard without attaching it to the barrel? Heck, just think of something wild yet useful!

Above all, have fun with it!

A "do it yourself" left hand slide, to avoid having to cock before lifting to fire or reaching over. There is a place I know of that will do it for about half the cost of the rifle. Wouldn't be that hard to do myself if i could just find the part...

Fewer sharp edges.

Safety easily flicked on and off with the firing hand (index of the shooting finger is fine, but it should be useable with short fingers).

Krebs/Beryl style top-of-the-receiver rail.

Vortex or Phantom flash suppressor instead of the slant brake.

Pmags, to reduce weight.

.223 version that takes AR magazines.

A lot of the above exist in the aftermarket, BTW.

Ditto. No complaints as is, really.

How about a folding stock with absolutely no wiggle?

I wouldn't mind seeing a collapsible stock for the SKS based on the design of those fancy M1A stocks that H20 has. Dunno why, but I think those stocks are damn sexy...and actually having a good, versatile stock for the SKS would be nice too. (I haven't tried the Tapco stocks yet...just can't bring myself to buy one that doesn't meet my requirements in a tacticool stock.)

Of course, there isn't anything wrong with factory SKS. I actually prefer the factory set-up over my other one sitting in a folding stock.

Way more sight radius.
Way better trigger.
Way more ergonomic controls, especially the safety which takes two hands to operate.
A last round bolt hold-open.

A Krebs-style rail over the dustcover, maybe an M14/H20-Man style telescoping stock, if it's a .223 version one of those mods that allows it to take AR mags (dunno who makes them, but I've seen them around, saw an AK feeding from a PMAG), get the charging handle to be placed on the left side of the receiver, and maybe come up with a more accurate system for the barrel....perhaps an SKS/Vz58-style short-stroke piston, rather than the long-stroke system? And, refine the trigger a bit.

That'd just about do it, I would think.

Why am I one of the few people that doesn't have a problem with the charging handle?

Hold by handguard, butt stock against shoulder, reach forward and cock. It's not like you can cock an AR without moving it off your shoulder, so why do so many people have troubles with the AK?

Anyway, an adapter (and cheap mags!) in x39, for the AR-style dropout.

A Krebs-style rail that doesn't cost half as much as the gun! Or at least sturdy aperture sights at the back. Mount them off the tang, maybe.

A smoother, easier-to-use safety.

A last-shot bolt hold-open would be nice. And a well-placed release to go with it.

Overall, aside from the rear sight, I have no problem with my AK. It is what it is, and it does its job very well. If I paid as much as an AR, then I would complain.

An sks with tech-sights fills all said requirements, minus cocking handle on left side. I don't mind the cocking handle on the right side, but I do mind the original sights. $80 pays for windage/elevation adjustable sights 13" closer to your eye. I believe that's with shipping. The sks has an easy to operate safety that doesn't make to much noise (deer don't seem to hear it being flicked off if done slowely) and can be operated with right hand, without moving your hand too far from the trigger. And best of all, the sks with the fixed mag at least, does have a bolt hold-open.

+1 on last round bolt hold open and +1 better safety. Underfolder is probably my favorite, but thats about it, sometimes there is something sexy about a raw rough simple AK.

Because the AR holds the bolt open when empty and all you have to do is hit the little paddle to release the bolt. I don't have any issues with the AK's charging handle either, I'm just sayin'. Anyway, if I wanted ergonomics I would just buy an AR, not change the AK.:D The Russian language probably doesn't even have a word for ergonomics, why mess with that?

I'm thinking AR 7.62x39 mags compatible with the SKS. I measured the AR magazines out and lo and behold they're just thin enough to clear the SKS magazine well. Give it an adapter, and I think we'd solve the quick-detach SKS magazine problem.

Krebs, Valmet and Galil have done everything I could want in an AK. My KTR-03 is pretty damn sweet.

High capacity, (easily) detachable magazines for the SKS, and it would best the AK.

I should add that I have, and love, both (and a Mosin).
