What to buy? AKM or SKS?

OP given your constraints, probably the SKS. Though an SVT40 is, IMO, a better rifle. Though it does get really hot after a few rounds fired. A bit more pricey perhaps initially, but after 6 crates of ammo price is factored in, the prices sort of even out.

I would rather have an unmodified SKS versus a heavily reworked, politically correct AK.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I'll go with a grade A SKS then. Or if I'm lucky a saiga 7.62 sporter if I can find one since they're the only NY legal AK. It just seems like $625 is pricey since I know only two years ago they could be had for 400-500 dollars

Between the SKS and the neutered AK, the SKS is going to have the better trigger, too. AKs are a hoot, but I'd wait til you can get one that hasn't got a politicians fingerprints all over it.

That Saiga's not just a fine compromise but a nice rifle in its own right. Problem is, you never know when things will devolve into encompassing detachable mags in general given where you currently live.

Yeah, the prices are higher than they were a few years ago on Saiga rifles. But you'd also be getting new rifle versus a battle-scarred rifle. Guess it depends on what you want.
