What is a G.I. Pencil barrel?

Ratshooter: Just pick up or order any complete lower from your local gun shop. I'd recommend a LMT.

Then just slap on the upper of your choice. Bravo Company USA has a bunch of uppers with decent lite barrels.

Slide in a BCM bolt carrier group and a charging handle, pop in the handgards ( the tool helps alot) and your done. Hardly a build and for hardly more than a store DPMS or RRA you can have a tier1 rifle ready for whatever.

If that's too pricey Stag has good uppers right now. So far they've been very good. But missing a 1/7 barrel and m4 ramps. Which we can work around, with the right ammo.

After my Colt Lightweight Target I decided to put a new Bushmaster pencil barrel on a Bushmaster. The lightweight Pencil is a treasure. In a semi-auto, you are not heating it up as in a machine-gun. The 16" (which is 1 1/2 inches longer than the military carbine) is stiff -- you don't have the leverage of the sling on it like on an extra-hot 20" barrel which was the pencil-barrel's military demise.

The HBAR's, and I am familiar with an original Colt, are front heavy. The heavy barrel carbine with a full stock is perfectly balanced. The light weight pencil carbine with a collapsible stock is the most amazing, balanced gun it has ever been my pleasure to handle and shoot. Really beyond words.

While we are having fun with this thread I would like to point out that I have always been a person that likes the base model type of stuff. I think it is called "Spartan Taste". I like a few upgrades on a truck and feel the same way about a rifle.

I like the idea of a lighter weight AR with the pencil barrel, basic open sights and the fixed carry handle. Simple upgrades would be top notch mags, chrome bore and a detachable carry handle in case in wanted to mount a scope. Just a plain jain dependeble working rifle. Like my SKS's, Marlin lever guns and multible bolt actions.

Now see!!! Just about the time I have myself convinced a 20" lightweight barrel is what I want along comes Al Lavodka (cool name) and makes good points for the 16" gun. I believe I said earlier that I have been looking at the Bushmaster 16" barreled AR police carbine at Academy and it is nice. I was hoping the price was going to drop a little but they are still listed at $959.

Its a nice little lightweight rifle. And BM is closer to the middle on the "List".
