Like it or not the American leveraction hunting rifle is quickly going the way of the dodo. In a few short years certianly within a generation a leveraction will become as much an oddity to see afield as a rolling block or high wall is today

Gotta say Winchester 70 and 94 would be the top 2. There are other good guns, maybe even better, but those 2 are American classics

Of all the "Classic" American rifles, I'm not sure I'd put the Model 70 in the top 5. Maybe not in the top 10.

(All depends on what criteria you are using for "Most Classic", I'm sure.)

The Remington 700 has a loyal, and deserved, following. The Garands & the CMP are a culture all their own. We often forget that the AR-15 is now fifty years old: With the currently huge AR interest & sales, plus the Retro build culture the AR-15 may be the emergent new classic.

Everyone I know has shot a .22, and if they haven't, well, they sure as heck haven't shot any of the others people regard as the "classic" American gun.

I never thought of the AR that way but it's certainly the current belle of the ball.


I'd say its a lever action 30-30 by Marlin and or Winchester.

i would consider any of the above to be top contenders. my first thought was for the ar15. military service since the 60's and a massive ammount of civilian ownership make it a top contender IMHO.

if we are going on for most iconic american rifle of all time, i cast my vote for the "gun that won the west," the '73 winchester.

personally, i doubt that. the good old 30-30 has been dropping deer for over 100 years and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. i still take to the woods with mine every year.

Odds are that the old Model 94 is the ultimate classic. Odds are that it's the most well-known American rifle there is, world-wide.

A reason why: I walked into a bar on the Marseilles waterfront, back in 1957. One of the guys in there scowled at me and commented, "Sales Yanqui!" I grinned and said, "I'm not a Yankee; I'm from Texas."

There's a lot of classic American rifles out there. Which one depends on what decade in our history you want to look at. I personally wouldn't put the Model 70 on top of the heap unless you were going for a list of classic American hunting rifles. If that were the case, look no further than the Remington 700.

Indeed the old M70's are classics. For me I rate the 99 Savage as a classic as well. Its a falling block action yet a repeater. An American classic for sure.

As for myself having a battery of pre 64 M70's along with 99's in .358 Win. that have been my woods rifles for half century I never had any use for a 94 Winchester. Fine with those who like them.

The Savage 99 may be one of the most under-appreciated rifles ever made. I'd put the Winchester 1895 in that category as well.

yes the Savage 99 is one of the most under-appriciated rifles of all time.

As to the list of classics you must define the criteria. No the Winchester 94 did not win the west, it came along later. Try the Sharps, get ride of Buffalo starve the indians.
The Springfield trapdoor, Most issued military rifle.Any of the multitude of Civil War surplus.

hehe, ive been drooling over a 99......but alas unemployment dosent leave much after bills....o wait cant pay those either LOL. Id have to say a 94 for levers tho, just because everyone knows them. 03spr or 700 would get my nod as far as bolts (but i cant chose between any of them LOL). Semis.....well i dunno, i dont really think of any as "classics", tho the garand would probobly qualify

I'd say the Winchester 94 is the other well loved American classic.

I also agree that the rotary magazine Savage 99 is very under appreciated.

Given the number made and the number used after the wars to put food on the table I would have to think the Springfield 1903 would be right up there.
