AK-74Me, maybe it's because I was a pro photographer in my day, but it's obvious to me from that first photo that the guy taking the picture is using a very long telephoto lens, I'd guess at least a 500mm. Due to the effect of what is called "Compression of Field", or squeezing toghether of the depth of field, it makes it look like things are much closer than they really are, especiall things in the background to the officer.
The photographer taking that picture would have been well out of the angle of fire, and I'd have taken my chances to get such a dramatic shot with a telephoto without thinking twice.
