What is your favorite rifle to hunt with?

For deer, it's a 1976 rem 700 BDL with a heavy barrel in .243 win. Topped with an old Leupold 8x. Was my first high power.

For small game it would be the Stevens 22/410 O/U. Made in the 50s, and bought used by my dad in the early 80s. Point and shoot and your target is dead. Its deadly accurate. On the off chance of large game, you can always load in a .410 slug. It's still got the original tenite furniture too. Taken many a squirrel with it.

My favorite depends on where I am hunting.... In rifle zones deer hunting this year I have been alternating between a Marlin 30AS (economy model 336) in .30-30 with a 1-4x 20mm Leupold and a Kimber sporterized Mod. 96 Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 with a 3.5-10x 40mm Leupold.. Now if I could only get a suitable deer in the crosshairs of either one I'd be happy......... Passed up two deer already this year.

A buddy took me out last Thursday with the idea of shooting a pig. I have always wanted to shoot one with my .458 Win Mag, just because. Passed on a nice doe early in (Mid afternoon), but shot a pig at around 125 yards late in the day. First time I have hunted with it. It's been a range toy up to now.

North of the “rifle line” in Michigan, it’s hands down my .275 Rigby built on a rescued (from a pawn shop, rifle bubba’d beyond hope) K98 action fitted with a three position safety, extended mag plate release, Timney trigger, and a #2 profile Shilen barrel on a nice Hogue stock with a Vx-6 scope.

Down south, it’s a Knight Disc Extreme .50 cal in Michigan, where black powder only is allowed in ML, and a Savage 10 ML-1 in Illinois where it’s legal to use a smokeless muzzleloader.

Years ago, I was bow-hunting in Georgia. I heard a noise under my stand, and looked down and saw a small doe sniffing at a lure I had dragged behind me. I was trying to figure out some way to make her go away, when a Voice From Above said, "This is the deer I sent you."

TWANG!

I have always been a traditionalist preferring single shots, bolt actions, and levers, but I have to say I am becoming a convert. This shocked me but my AR15 in 7.62x39 that I used this year was the best all around rifle I've ever hunted with. The compact size, controls that work perfectly with gloves on, being completely weatherproof, and fast follow up shots won me over.

Its handloaded with a 125 nosler accubond at 2620 fps, which although they worked fine I would like a more powerful caliber. I am building an AR10 and when they become available I will be building a 358 yeti upper.

I shot 3 with the AR and I also hunted with my 357 max contender pistol which I took a doe with, and my Krag, but didn't see any deer on the days I carried the krag.

Browning X-Bolt SS Dura touch stock .308 Win with a 3-9X40 Nikon ProStaff.
This is its first year not going out in the woods since I bought it 10 years ago. I had rotator cuff surgery on opening morning.

These days I hunt pigs at night more than I hunt deer during the day, so my favorite hunting rifle is a custom AR-15 in 6.8 SPC. Wilson Combat barrel that I had fluted. Geissele SSA trigger. Built it to be lightweight with enough punch to put pigs down. It replaced my SCAR-17 and 458 SOCOM pretty quickly after it was completed.

Since the early 80's my go-to deer rifle has been a Remington M-700 in 308. It started life as a BDL but the only thing Remington that remains is the action. It has been restocked, rebarreled and the trigger and firing pin assembly have been replaced. It wears a West German Ziess 3 X 9 scope. I can't count the number of deer that I have taken with it. From Canada, to Texas, Wyoming, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas, it just works! I shoot my handloads, a 150 gr Sierra Pro Hunter over a case full of 4064.

Sometimes if I can drive up to a stand in a cutover or on a timber company road I'll take my custom 300WSM but its too heavy to walk around with. For longer ranges the ability to dial that NF scope is nice!

I've said it before, DM~ but that drilling is just too cool.
thankyouvery much!

I took two deer with it a few weeks ago, a nice buck and then a doe... The buck was #30

and the doe #31

big game animals for the freezer, since I've owned it...

Generally, I shoot one deer a year with it and then switch to a different rifle...

I have an old (1983) Winchester Model 70 Featherweight (yeah, it's a non-classic push-feed) in .30-06 with a crappy Redfield 3x9 that's taken several whitetail and a couple muleys. It's just accurate and handy to carry, plus I don't worry about getting it wet or scarred-up ... so I guess it's my favorite.
