What is you're idea of the perfect Truck, or "car" gun?

Reading through these posts makes me realize that my truck gun might not be as practical in an urban environment. But my small town of under 3000 people and miles of country in every direction makes my choice viable. I still couldn't fathom living in a city as I can hardly stand visiting one for over a couple days. Feel sorry for you city guys.

Perfect truck gun is ultra simplistic, compact, and minute of rabbit accurate. If your in territory where you are potentially not top of the food chain then bring enough gun to get back to the top and still be compact and minute of rabbit accurate.

When I have a "gun" in the truck it's usually on the job. The requirements- "handy" enough it can be grabbed and brought into play quickly. "Pointable" enough to be able to hit a running coyote and powerful enough to put down an injured cow. What has fit the bill for me is the humble 92 Winchester carbine in 32-20 affectionately known as the "hungry rifle." And yes, I know it only has a 12 round capacity, slow to reload and the 32-20 isn't a "man-stopper" but let's face it, I'm checking fences not storming an enemy position.

I am so jealous.

I started looking too late for such a rifle and the market values had gone thru the roof (at least, they were more than I was willing to pay). I did manage to find an abused Marlin 27-S Pump which cleaned up nicely but it is not the same as a lever-action. ;)

All depends on where you'll be.

For me, splitting time between urban and rural environments and spending a lot of time on the road in between, it's a full-sized handgun that's easily accessible to the driver, and an AR or AK in a discrete package.

Just an old WIN model 94 30-30 carbine that has seen better days finish wise. Accurate and reliable so if it gets a little more rust and road grime on it I'll not worry.

Here lately I've been hauling a AK Draco plus a surplus Mollie fighting load carrier with 2 thirty round mags and 2 twenty round mags for insurance. I live in a rural area and either lock the truck or carry it in the shop or the house. It depends on what I choose to do. Hunting season for deer will open next month and I'll probably leave it behind and carry a rifle/ 300 Magnum or 7mm Mauser. I'll always have my xds and 38 on me anyway.

I just keep ammo in my car, I figure if I go down ssouth to Ft Lauderdale or Miami, I am armed with 2 guns any way, I don't want my mustang broken into, but they are a target. So I won't leave a 2000 dollar or even a 500 dollar gun in it. But God forbid something like an explosion or co ordinated attack happened, like 911, I will need ammo more than a large weapon to get home. If the crap really did hit the fan.Perhaps a 357 with a 4-6inch barrel. That would stop just about anything, from a snake to a dragon.
I saw the coolest Lizard yesterday sunning himself near the Hospital in Vero. The sucker looked like a log until I got close. He was a good 5+ foot long, and I thought it was a gator at first, he was a good 2+ foot thick, but no mistaking that crown and head. Man I been down here 25 years and have seen some big lixards but nothing like this, he was a throwback to the prehistoric ages, " just thought I would throw that in" would never shoot one. I wish I could have got a photo of him, but it was a bad spot.

A rugged little Kel-Tec P-3AT loaded with Hornady personal defense rounds that rides in the center console. I can drop it into a pocket if needed when I exit the vehicle and in the unfortunate event it ever got stolen it wouldn't be a huge monetary loss.

I was previously attacked on this forum for considering a vehicle long gun. Hopefully I don't get attacked for replying.

My answer is 12.5" AK SBR with folding stock. Hornady SSTs.

Something capable of taking care of two and four legged predators. Specifics to fit your specific needs. I am more worried about close range and people. For me, I just settled on a pump 12 gauge shotgun. I'd be just as happy with a bolt or lever action rifle, semi auto rifle. I'd even be happy if it a side by side shotgun. Mostly want something I am comfortable at using.

I have a friend I chatted with this about and didn't agree with choice and explained why. When I asked my friend what did they have, the answer was nothing yet as still debating the options. I think analysis paralysis is the bigger risk.

I have two trucks, and live "sorta in the city", in an area known more for pickup trucks and country music than for anything urban (this city doesn't even have a "downtown".)

When I kept one in my truck, it was a cheap single-shot 20 gauge, with an empty chamber and five rounds of 00 on the sleeve.

Now, I have two trucks. I've considered it again, but haven't done it yet. If I do, it would probably be that one in one truck and a sawed-down (but still legal) 12 gauge single someone gave me about 20+ years back in the other.

I have a Phoenix HP22A and a Hi-Point C9, neither of which I've really found much use for recently. Perhaps one or both of these may one day find their way into such a role, too.

No fewer than two handguns enter/exit each truck whenever I do; one is worn and the other is carried in a small bag that includes a few other things.

That depends on where the truck is gonna be. Could be an AR pistol or carbine or a lever carbine could be a shotgun or M1a all have served at one time or another

All of my firearms have been "truck guns" at one time or another. They're all reliable and bought to be used. I certainly wouldn't want a pretty gun rolling around behind the seat, but I only own one gun I consider pretty. Well, pretty, but it's carried and used.
If one's truck is normally found in the concrete jungle, a full sized auto pistol or revolver of sufficient caliber is the ticket. There are too many to list. If the truck is on a ranch or farm or checking wells? I personally enjoyed the SKS or even a .44 lever action Rossi for the occasional hog opportunity that may present itself.
