It appears the definition has changed over the years. It used to be a gun that folks left in the truck, usually a carbine or a Beater of some type, that stayed in the truck, maybe in a gun rack or on the floor under the back seat, maybe a 22 rifle like the good old 10/22.. Something for animals on the property, or breaking down somewhere late at night on a back road Perhaps something that was a bit less than in spectauler shape.
But now the meaning is different, I see guys with SBR's in Pellican cases. What would you consider a perfect Truck gun. Is it something that stays in the vechicle or something that goes in when you do? Is it a pistol or a rifle, maybe a shotgun? These guys think it's one of 5, what say you all?

For truck gun I think "handy" rifle since I am always carrying a pistol.

My ideal truck gun is an M1 Carbine ... but they have increased so much in value that it pushes them out of the running. Next choice: an inexpensive shorty AR.

BTW, I would never leave it outside in the vehicle overnight. In my garage, though, not a problem.

After trying out an AR "pistol", and finding it too much of a compromise, I would look at something that has more capability than your CCW, and fits your needs. My CCW is plenty around here, but, if I felt that I might need more, and had a "get-home bag", it would contain a Glock 17 with extra 33-round magazines. If I were to keep something in my trunk, it would be a KISS AR15 with iron sights, light, 14.5" P&W barrel, and sling, with a chest rig with extra mags. I hope I never feel the need for either around here, but, as you can see, I have given it some thought.

Whatever one chooses for a truck gun depends on what they think they would use the gun for. I figure we are talking long guns since handguns are easy enough to take in any vehicle.

My vision for my own vehicle long gun is a .22 magnum bolt action rifle that I cut down nearly two years ago. It's only 34-1/4" long and carries 33 rounds on board (15 in the three magazines and 18 in the buttstock).

I change mine up depending on the time the of year and other factors. Lots of the time it's a simple .22lr or 410 single shot, during hunting season/winter months it goes to a hunting gun which may mean the 12ga I duck hunt with or rifle I deer hunt with, if their have been coyotes around it'll be a smaller calibered rifle. And I always have a extra pistol to.

So the perfect truck gun for me would have to be a drilling and then it still wouldn't be perfect, just closer.

These days I think a Yugo M48 is a good option since they are around $300 and in a powerful round. Really depends on the user though, have to be good with it no matter the option.

SKS behind the seat, I'm gonna be carrying some sort of handgun pretty much all the time anyway. My truck is safe while at home.

I think a short levergun in a magnum pistol round would be my choice for an every day truck gun. A bolty or semi in .223 or 7.62x39 would also fit my idea of a truck gun.....my mini14 or 14" contender in 7-30 are mine.

My father inlaw always has his 110 in 7mm behind his seat.

When I had a truck gun it was a high point 9mm carbine, lived behind my back seat. I always had my carry gun on me, the high point was there if I needed something extra

I keep an old beater s&w revolver in a biometric safe which itself is chained to the passenger seat. I can get to it in under 5 seconds. This way if I forgot my regular carry gun for some reason, I've at least got something.

I keep a 16" AR-15 behind the seat with a collapsible stock. I have 100 Rds of 55 soft point ammo in the glove box and it is setting with 2-30rd mags coupled together. One mag has 65 grain "deer" loads and the other mag has 50gr. Coyote ammo. Fixed 4X scope with backup fold down iron sights. I have used it for everything, from putting down farm animals to random coyote encounters and even a backup deer gun last year when my primary guns sight broke.

Inexpensive, reliable, and handy were my criteria. Living in rural/suburban areas wasn't super worried about theft. Just didn't want to beat a nice gun around. Surplus military carbines fit the role well. No worries about breaking down, plenty of power for hunting. Keep rifle in case, few dozen rounds in stripper clips or mags.

Well I'm not a tricked out tacticool operator with suppressed SBR's ready to rock in Pelican cases all over my vehicle... so maybe my choice will be a little outdated.

I think a lever action .30-30 with a barrel 20" or less, an SKS, or even an AK (if it is accurate enough) would all be good truck guns. The intermeddiate .30 caliber cartridges make for a great game getter and work for defense as well. The guns mentioned are all relatively compact, powerful, reliable, durable, and inexpensive.

I am not one for leaving guns in cars but if I lived in a nicer, more rural area I'd have one of the abovs tucket behind the seat.

I've been evolving and have bounced around between a few different ones over the last decade or so. A mosin M44, but then decided a semi-auto would be better. So I went with an M1 carbine, but then decided I wanted better ballistics, ammo availability, and something not so valuable. I once considered the WASR, but I got to thinkin that if ever in a situation where it was to be seriously used....other good guys may mistake me for a bad guy, just because the AK is so often used by bad guys... And I'd hate to get shot over mistaken identity.
Then I went with a mini14 with a folding choate, but just recently I decided I wanted some glass on it, and more readily available parts and magazines...so I finally (grudgingly) decided that the AR15 is actually pretty awesome in this role.
They're only recently growing on me....
So my old CAI lower (it's been reliable as a hammer) and A2 carbine upper has a 16.5" barrel, adjustable stock, a trophy series 3x9, with a few extra mags loaded with 55gr SP.
all kept in a soft case, with a multi-tool, oil and brushes.

It doesn't take up much space, and is pretty easy to move in and out of the vehicle as needed.

I typically have a lever Marlin 336 or an M-4 under my ex-cab's rear seat ... unloaded, per state law, but with ammo or two coupled mags handy; a S&W M&P-9 with 3 mags permanently resides in the console. My truck is garaged when I'm at home.

The colt commando upper and noveske lowered pistol I'm building running a shockwave blade wrist support. and geiselle trigger. With a 60 round surefire mag

I think there should be a distinct division between urban truck gun for you folks that live in the big city and have to strip your truck of valuables each and every day and country folk who have a utility gun in the truck to be used like an every day tool. I have long carried an 870 and a beater M4 (S&W Sport) behind the seats of my Suburban. They are not defensive weapons but are mostly employed in the dispatch of critters like hogs, javelinas and buzz tails. Should the need arise, they could just as well be used as defensive weapons. I also got a Glock 21 in the console 'cause you need a handgun for general work.

Carrying broke down weapons in bags and suppressed rifles seems like silly stuff to me. When is the last time you have had an honest real need for stuff like that??????? I have seen the mules with the square packs and the coyotes with the AKs moving with purpose through the South Texas Brush Country. Let 'em roll. They ain't bothering me more than a call to Border Patrol. It they wanna stop and tête-à-tête on my AO, I can do that too.

You need a good handgun easy at hand at home or in your vehicle and enough long gun to match your foe should the need arise. Keep it simple.

If I lived in the big city I would want an up-armored HMV, A SAW and a MK-19 but I don't live there. I made a conscious decision to get out of that big city. You can too if you put your mind to it.

For a number of years my car gun was typically a used S&W Model 10 or some inexpensive 9mm. semi-auto with a .22 rifle in the trunk (Charter Arms AR7). Nowadays it's whatever I'm carrying on me as I don't like leaving guns or any sort of valuables in the car.

I keep am old Type 53 7.62x54r under my seat as a truck gun.

Less than 200 bucks, robust construction, nice hard hitting round, etc.

I keep it loaded with 4 (empty chamber) and 10 more rounds in a cuff on the stock. I take it out and wipe it down once every great while. I don't think I've actually shot it in 3 years.

Cheap single shot 12ga with a sleeve of 00-Buck, box of #6 lead, and a box of BB-Fasteel for impromptu super-sneaks on unsuspecting geese...

Ready for anything from bunnies to bear, and two-legged critters if need be...

This would be good if I lived in the country, but since I'm a city boy I don't really have a need for one in my vehicle all the time. I'll have to settle for my CCW for now.

I appreciate AndyJ's post. Your truck/car gun will be different depending on your circumstances. There are truck guns for rural living (varmit control primarily), and there are vehicle "get home" guns for defense, and the line can blur between the two.

I do a long commute - over 150 miles round trip - every day in a rural area that includes some small & medium sized towns. One day, my car will likely break down or have a flat. I don't know when it will happen, where along the route it'll happen, or who might stop to "help" me. I have a 16 round, low cost (<$300), reliable, polymer handgun in a cabled lockbox - along with a couple of extra mags - available for that occasion. I will have my EDC pocket handgun too, but something with a little more capacity is my car gun.

I don't leave a gun in my truck, but I wouldn't mind having a CZ Scorpion Carbine under the back seat, or even a Marlin 357 levergun.
