What price do you start aggressively buying ammo?

Assumption: This is a thread on buying new range/training ammo. Not really looking to banter reloading vs. buying commercial ammo if not relevant .

Plenty of threads on ammo being more available and prices coming down. Maybe you are already buying some….maybe not. But if you’re like many and like to have a good cache of ammo to weather the political and economic storms, I’m curious if it’s gotten low enough to start seriously buying. By ‘seriously buying’, I’m basically saying buying to keep for a rainy day, not to shoot any time soon.

I was on the SGAmmo.com website and they have 9MM for as low as $230/1000 for aluminum case, and $260/1000 for brass case. Both prices include free shipping.

I see that as tempting. I’m seriously considering a case or two of that aluminum case as it shoots fine and I use it for IDPA’s and other places I sometimes shoot where I can’t reclaim my brass. I’d also use it for bringing other shooters to the range as I don’t supply my reloads to new shooters. Just a “me” thing.

You may not be shooting 9MM but there are other cartridges that are more available and prices dropping. Are you seeing prices dropping to near “bulk buying” levels yet?

I remember the days of 11 cent a round 9 mm. Brass cased, included shipping. :)

Should have bought a couple skid loads.

I also remember cheap primers.

Instead of buying them, I remember thinking why buy them and waste valuable space in my garage storing them when I can just go to the next gun show and get them.

Ammo cost is not an issue, lack of funds is the issue. Back when the gov was giving out free money, I bought a stash of 22s at the hefty prices of $6-$8 per 50. But I didn’t by to resell, I bought to have a better supply. And I had to strike while I had the extra money and the ammo was available. It’s still in the ammo box, next to some mini mags I bought at what was the high price of $10 per 100 8 years ago.

I haven't bought factory centerfire ammo in some time and it was then just to replenish JHP defense ammo used slowly in refamiliarization.

I AM on the lookout for reloading components. I bit the bullet and paid $80 for primers at Academy and Target Sports. Keeping my eye open for Bullseye for midrange target .45 ACP.

Good point…inflation is causing us to rethink a lot of purchases too.

The OP posed a simple question- except it’s not that simple.
There is the factor of price, and for each individual there is also the factor of degree of need. That sets up a dynamic that is specific to each potential buyer.

I agree! Not one answer fits all situations! And cost of food/fuel/etc. certainly does not help with the ammo budget!

I'll lay down a greater stockpile when prices get:
9mm, 124gr ball, new manufactured, brass case = $200/shipped/1000rds
5.56, m193, new manufactured, brass case = $300/shipped/1000rds
7.62x39, 123-125gr, steel cased = $200/shipped/1000rds.
308WIN, m80, new manufactured, brass case = $450-500/shipped/1000rds
22lr, CCI mini-mags for $0.07/round
Small Rifle\Pistol Primers = .04/primer and I'll be buying a whole pile of them.

Right now I only shoot what I buy and not dip into my stockpile.

Most all of the rest of the ammo is reloaded by me and only purchased if I need some additional brass.

I agree with the above, but I also wonder if it's just wishful thinking that we'll ever see those prices again. That's the problem with inflation, as opposed to bubbles caused by panics and various other events. I'm contemplating using those 9mm reloading dies I bought a few years ago "just in case" for the first time.

That's why I mentioned I only shoot what I buy at this point. If those prices never come back then I'll just be rotating the stockpile I have out as I shoot and replenish at higher costs. But if those prices ever get back, Katie bar the door.

Had it in my cart but they charge tax to Ohio. :(

Aggressively buying? When the prices are aggressively low. If I saw prices much lower than 2019, then I would be buying. If they only drop to resemble 2019 prices, I might start buying some. If they remain meaningfully above 2019 prices, what's the hurry? That's not to say that I'm predicting they'll ever go that low again. They may never. The dollar isn't worth as much as it was. But what would make them go up in the near term? Why not wait until they either go down, or 2024 starts to come into shape, about a year from now. The incumbent administration would mean prices continue to decline. Why would it be any different? A republican administration would mean the prices could drop into a major slump. I don't see an urgency to buy anything.

The “best time” will become crystal clear when the next sudden panic begins. Or did the worst of the sociopaths/psychos “heal” themselves?:)

Today’s prices will then be a comparative bargain .

When the PTR-91 / HK clone bit last spring I bought a few thousand rds, of .308 to avoid being Trapped during the next —Unexpected/ surprise —panic.

If I was starting out with no "stash" of ammunition. I would be dollar cost averaging into a stash, meaning I would buy double what I plan to shoot each time, and when I'm not shooting and have a little extra cash would make some minor purchases here and there. And I certainly wouldn't be shooting any of the stash as it's building up.

I'm in a place where I can feel comfortable with what I have put up, but am no willing to dip into it to shoot, so I shoot at today's prices.

5.56 and 7.62x39 were the last two holdouts for me as far as reloading.

I now load them as well but, the last time I did buy these they were $79/1000.

When I think about it now, I wish I would have been a much more aggressive buyer then!

*EDIT*
I'm not really seeing prices coming down (I'm sure they are but I haven't paid enough attention to speak with any confidence) as much as I'm seeing greatly increased availability.

I am on the hunt for goose shells once I figure out what I want to stockpile. Prices have moderated a bit and availability is better than it was. My stash is getting low on those after 3 years of panic. Other than that, I am really looking for primers.

A friend, who shoot sporting clays, had a pallet of shells drop shipped to his house; plopped right in his driveway, 5-6 years ago.

I jokingly laughed when I saw it and asked why he would buy that much.

I don't shoot sporting clays but he had another acquaintance who did, split it with him.

In retrospect, it was a smart move.

I'd go broke buying shot, but have everything else to load a lot of trap shells. Non-tox is a whole nother thing and to date I haven't tried loading it. Not a huge volume deal for me, but I probably go through a case a year. I started out pretty good, but 3 years of BS has me getting thin on goose shells in particular. Everything else I pretty much have no problem with a stash of ammo or plenty of components to roll my own.
