Hey peeps,

I'm trying to get a new scope for my AR-10, but I'm a bit stumped. Any best scope for AR-10 recommendations or resources I should refer to?

Thanks,
John

What do you want to do with your AR-10? Knock down bad guys as they invade your living room? Hunt deer to 200yrds? Shooting gas gun PRS matches out to 1400yrds?

What kind of vehicle do I need for work? The answer kinda depends whether my job involves simply commuting to an office or hauling freight loads on lowboys across the country.

This seems to be the ultimate for general use. I bought one quite a few years back when they were new and it is my best scope quality wise all around. I first bought it to put on my .50 BMG AR50 , but found it was not really the hot set up for the extreme ranges I was shooting with other .50 bmg friends in the desert. So it went back on first a custom .264 Win model 70, again for small targets at beyond 600 yards not enough power. It finally lives on my Smith enterprise prepped M1A I have had for 30+ years in a Sadlak mount and it is indeed perfect for how I use the rifle. Soooo when I built an AR10 a couple years ago I thought about putting it on there but remembered all the ammo I burned to get it sighted in and have logged the number of clicks at various ranges and thought - NAW ! I I finally put on a fire dot duplex side focus Leupold 3-15x and low and behold the HD glass on this new Leupold is brighter than the bomb proof Night force and lighter weight too. I seems perfect for the AR10 , I first tried a VXR 2-7 on it and it wasn't enough, the rifle outran the scope after 400 yards. At 600 yards with Federal match ammo I can get 6"+- groups from bags with my all Aero except Criterion 18" stainless fluted barrel , Timney 4 lb single stage "AR10 competition" trigger and JP adjustable gas block ,AR10 build . My son did face off the upper receiver with a precision mill cut before we put the barrel on with the Aero free float system nut . It is much more accurate than the M1a which resides in Calif. and the AR10 was built and remains in Oregon :)

This is the scope I have on my AR-10: https://swfa.com/swfa-ss-10x42m-tactical-30mm-riflescope-6.html

I prefer a fixed power scope because the eye relief doesn't change, as happens with variable power scopes. In addition it's an MOA scope (reticle and turret adjustments), which is more user friendly to me than a Milliradian scope. Finally it's rated to withstand .50 BMG recoil.

Good luck!

Before anyone can a reasonable response, we would need to know intended use, at what range, and budget

That's a really, really good point! To answer your question, I'm trying to use it for hunting deer at around 200-300 yards range. And thank you, Gordon, for such a wonderful story and recommendations -- I'll keep them in mind!

For 0-300yrd hunting, which is generally what I consider my bread and butter hunting range, I love a 4-16x44mm optic. The Sig Sauer Tango4 4-16x44 has quickly become my go-to, bread and butter optic for this use.

Well to resurrect this month old thread I wanted to add my latest. I bought a 6.5 Creedmore upper for my AR-10 build as described above , it is the Aero M5e factory deal with 24" barrel which I got a great deal for less than $600 shipped.

After thinking what scope , and being new to this 6.5 Creedmore game I thought I would jump in and buy some 21st+ century elctronic sight and bought the 5-20x ATN 4k Pro digital sight which other than software glitches seems to get good reviews . I got it with the extra battery bundle for $710 shipped , which matches the Amazon without the battery price. If the scope works out, and I only have hand held tried it out as I go thru a long learning curve and firmware updates , I may up grade the mounts to an quick detachable mount for it's 30mm tube. The scope even can be programmed for returning between different rifles !

I'll let you know ! I bought 200 rounds of Federal 140 grain Whitetail loads for $165 shipped to get started :)

Personally. I let the rifle make the decision for me. I have an old Weaver K series on a Marlin 336C in 35R. It does fine for as far as the Marlin can shoot accurately. I have mid-range scopes on mid-range rifles and high end scopes on long distance capable rifles. YMMV, but it works for me. Or why put a 1000 yard scope on a 300 yard rifle?
