What should be my next purchase?

Magic Man, I have a 1911 (built and delivered to Navy in 1912) but haven't a clue what it's worth. It's a shooter. Some guy who probably stole it long ago had gotten rid of all the government markings but probably got scared and put the serial number back on: 71##. My brother (just discharged) acquired it from a recently discharged major in about 1946. I got it in 2008 (traded a 20-gauge Mossberg pump). I was worried about the markings' beng scraped off so I bit the bullet figuratively and called the local ATF field office. The agent was most affable and helpful and told me not to worrry so long as it has a serial number, even one that was "reinstalled." He must have been telling the truth because I had given him my name and have had no unwelcome guests.

I have since had the pistol cleaned, fully (not field) stripped, lubed, and test fired. It passed his tests and fed perfectly, although he said it hit a little bit low and rght (as I recall). I can give you the smith's name and telephone number if you wanted to seriously discuss buying it. He was for many years the gunsmith for Potomac Arms--an Interarmco retail shop right at the interarms warehouses in Alexandia, Virginia.

If you can get a way to me to contact you privately I'll do that. I'd probably want around $350 for it.

I like the SKS and AK rifles. They are cheap to buy.

Also either a Mini-14 or AR15. Either can be had in the $600 - $650 price range.

You can get some Mosin Nagants or Mausers.

I prefer rifles over pistols as you can see.

As others have said, you can't go wrong with a 1911. I own several, in several different calibers, all made by Colt. If you end up liking the 1911, there are three things you've probably want to have done to it. 1) Add a beaver tail grip safety. 2) Get the front strap and main spring housing checkered for improved grip. 3) Improve the sights.

Before I spent $400 on an "economical" 1911, I would very much suggest adding another $100 and taking a close look at Taurus' version. I don't own one, but have looked closely at a couple on several different occasions and they look pretty good to me. The guys who own them love them. I don't recall if the frames are checkered or not, but they do have a very nice beavertail safety installed from the factory and the sights are pretty decent too.

I had to go check my memory on the Taurus PT1911. I can get the .38 Super version from Guns America to my local retailer for $511. The 45ACP version appears to be about $70 higher.

Where it differs from your typical $400 1911:

Forged Frame and slide
The frame *is* indeed checkered
Heine 3-dot sights
ambi safety
beavertail safety
lightened trigger
Commander style hammer
lowered and flared ejection port

I mights to have to go order one. :)

Local guy has an unfired SA 1911 for $550. I might have to grab it if I don't like the RIA 1911 for $320 on Thursday.

The Taurus looks nice. I am terrible at saving, but Cabelas has lay-a-way so I may go this route with the Taurus. I have a revolver from them and I love it.

I've owned several of their pistols and never had any problems with them. Well, I think a grip screw came loose on my PT58. Over 20 years ago I had one of their 92Cs and I'd shudder to think how many rounds were unceremoniously stuffed down the tube.

The only experience I have with their customer service was a few month ago after I purchased one of their .357 Lightning clone rifles. The thing was not chambered properly and was blowing out .38 Super loads, but would handle .357 Magnum just fine. I sent it back and and a month later had a refund check in hand. Now, I did have to call them to find out what they were doing, but it took one call. They informed me they weren't repairing the rifle, and offered a refund or a replacement against any of their other products.

So don't get me wrong, I don't expect their 1911 to be on par with a custom 1911 or anything. Unfortunately, it probably is on par or better than what Colt's currently offering. (Course, that ain't sayin' much.)

Ruger Mk III (or the 22/45 version), some mags, ammo.

I'd also take the balance of the money and buy some ammo to shoot with (or maybe even go take a handgun course). More practice will be more practical than buying more handguns. I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but it's an answer that will take you farther than another centerfire handgun.

You can get a rock island 1911 for under $400 shipped on gunbroker. Just add your FFL transfer fee on to that.

The real question is, where can you buy a rock island 1911 chambered for 9mm?????
