What squad car gun if you could choose?

stuckinsocal, I like the way a Mini handles. Being left-eye dominant, I am better off shooting rifles from the left shoulder, and the Mini's safety is very lefty-friendly. Moreover, the vertical position of the AR15 safety, when ready to fire in semi-auto mode, sets off alarm bells in my head, due to a couple decades of drilling to "not get caught with my dingus down," the dingus being the safety lever on such DA autopistols as the Beretta 92, Walther PP/PPK, and 1st-3rd Generation S&W autos. Moreover, the Mini, at extreme close range, does not require so much adjustment for the line of sight over bore axis situation. Guys who learned with the M16/AR15 system from the start wll obviously not share my anxieties about the AR15 safety lever and line-of-sight/bore axis situation.

I am certainly not saying a Mini-14 is a better warfighting weapon than the AR15 system! It is a superb ranch/utility carbine, with utility including close-range self-defense.

Stay safe out there!

Many posters seem to prefer the AR type platform.

I suspect that this is a combination of two things.

1) The AR can do things at long range that a shotgun cannot

2) Many in Law Enforcement are ex-military and very comfortable with the AR.

I am a bit surprised, however, that not more wanted an AR with a bullet that carried a bit more punch than a .223

Thanks to all for the great posts.

In my LEO days we carried Remington 870 Wingmaster Police models with 4 in the tube and none chambered. I felt we should also have carried an AR-15.

A Mossberg 590 and a Colt M-16...best of both worlds !!

About 3 years before I retired from law enforcement, my department bought about 6 35-40 year-old, Vietnam Era, M-16 A2's for all the road patrol sergeants. The one I wound up with was in pretty good shape, and shot like a dream. Best of all....fully automatic. Could only do full rock & roll at the range though, and all the other guys just drooled at the chance to shoot it.
Right before I left, they got the rest of the guys Rock River M-4's. Offered me a new one, but I stuck with the old Colt. Funny thing, they would not let me take the Colt when I retired......

Shotgun - Remington 870P

Rifle - (City) Ruger Mini 14 5.56x45mm NATO

Rifle - (Rural) Springfield M1A 7.62x51mm NATO Scout or SOCOM w/Quad rail

However, if I was in an area where bad guys routinely barricade themselves or understand the use of cover, the Springfield would be my choice even in the city.
