What to do / not to do in this incident?

I imagine if they wait long enough beside a road leading to/from a casino
that chances are they will find someone with money. Your friend had
unlucky timing.

it's kind of like waiting to mug people near an ATM rather than waiting
by dumpsters frequented by the homeless. Which location are you more
likely to find someone with cash?

Without even slowing down, I'd use my cellphone and request assistance
for a stranded motorist from the State Police. I've done it numerous times.

Sounds like your friend thought he was going to get himself some you know what and the female and her accomplice gave him the you know what.

Anybody who gambles at a casino long enough to actually win $4000 doesn't know enough about the reality of stacked odds to keep himself from falling into a situation like this.

Call the police when you see a stranded motorist. If the stranded person is legit you are helping them - if they are not then you are helping the police.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume the BG's were at the casino watching and so were aware of the $4,000. Seeing the friend leave they drive ahead and set up the ambush specifically targeting the friend. The friend then happens along and pulls up alongside to help. Even if he stays in his car and just rolls down the window, what is to keep the BG in the other car from taking a shot at him through the window? :( Might be a miss, but why take the chance? The BGs may prefer to rob and not cross the line to murder, but $4,000 is a lot of money and life isn't valued as highly by some BG's as it is by you and me.

I wouldn't stop, wouldn't slow down, and would make call to LE about stranded motorist. Not that I wouldn't like to help, but I have a family that depends on me.

Tell him to be extra vigilante, cancel his C cards, etc. These a- holes now have all his personal info , may steal his identity, or come "shopping" at his house. This may not be over yet.
Sometimes I stop. Sometimes I don't. The last one was an unknown car and driver on my dead end road. Car was pulled off, guy was slumped over the wheel. I asked if he was ok from my car. No response. I blew the horn. No response. I called the cops. No way was I going to walk up on that. Too many crazy dopers out there.

The best strategy in a case like this is to call the police on your cell phone and report the stranded motorist.

Of course, one time in California I didn't have a cell phone -- but after passing the stranded motorist I spotted a California Highway Patrolman. I flashed my lights and when he finally pulled over, I told him there was someone stranded in the desert a few miles back.

His response was, "What do you want me to do about it?":banghead:
