What would you Change the US Assault rifle to

We're talking about replacing a rifle. Doing so with a sub gun (granted, with some cool cosmetic bits) would seem counter-intuitive to me... ;)

WAY OT: there's a shop in Florida called the Broom Closet, that reconditions Broomies. If you have a mismatched shooter, they'll do the "Star Wars" conversion. Can you imagine taking one chambered in 9mm to the range, and firing tracers out of it? :D

I like my PAWS ZX-5

How 'bout a FN_FAL Congo type rifle w/ 18"bbl, optics/accessory rail, side folding andcollapsing stock chambered in .250-3000 savage or 7mm-08( loaded w/ light weight bullets in a solid VLD very low drag design made of copper or another alloy, so that one would have very high velocity and good ballistic coeffcient)
Hey, ya'll said it was purely a fanciful proposition, so why not go all out?

I think the next BIG thing will not be the replacement of the M16/M4-M203 platform, but instead the introduction of a 20 mm magazine- fed airburst weapon that can be mounted under the hand guard of the M16. After all, if there's something you see on all of the new and supposedly "improved" weapons the arms companies are trying to get the Army to buy to replace the "outdated" M16, it's that they all have a 20 mm weapon incorporated into the design. The M16 for the most part will remain unchanged, but might experience an upgrade in power (to 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel) and the introduction of an accompanying 20 mm weapons system.

A useless firearm today. Way too big, way too heavy, a 30-06 in full auto cannot be controlled by hand, and 30-06 ammo is way too heavy.

The BAR was controllable because it was heavy.

The Army has already decided that 20mm HE is not effective, which pretty much killed the OICW/XM29. Now the attention is on the 25mm, in the form of the XM-25 and XM-307.

The airtbursting munition is seen as one possible next step, as the existing, linear weapons systems (rifles, MG, etc) have a much lower hit probability.
