I just got a CZ 550 FS in .308. Shooting offhand with no rest at 100 yards what's poor, good, excellent, etc. in terms of hits? At 50 yards? What about the same ranges with a AR-15 and a M1A? Ironsights only. My right eye is 20/30.

What .308 surplus do you recommend? Sources?

I've got a BRNO 602 ZKK in .458 Winchester Magnum. Bavarian style stock. The recoil is quite manageable but the price of the ammo isn't. That's mainly the purpose of the CZ 550 FS. It was the only .308 that CZ offered with the same style buttstock. I want to practice a good bit for I hope to take the BRNO to Africa one day. Tips?

Good is being able to keep all your hits in an 8" circle at 100 yards, offhand, under any realistic environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat mirage.)

Poor is anything less.

Excellent is the same as good, but on a moving target.

My criteria - use at your own risk. :D

Ditto that

I'd say Chris has good criteria for the offhand .308. My only slight discrepancy is that I'd tend to call it excellent if any grouping is 5" or less (i.e., 2 shots out of...about 20) :D . YMMV.

NRA HP targets' X ring is 3" at 200 yrds, which is the distance you fire the M1, M14 and AR15 standing, slow fire (offhand)

i'd call that a good measure of "excellent" however, if you were to take away the schnazzy shooting jackets and NM sights and doodads, I'll wager "excellent" would be a good MOA or 2 less. I'd be real interested to know what David Tubb could shoot in bermuda shorts and a tee-shirt, with A1 sights. (still impressive, I'm sure)

now, if you're talking surplus ammo... knock another 2 MOA off it, would be my guess.

So, with off-the-shelf stuff, 5 and a half MOA would seem pretty good to me, offhand. And by that I mean, of 10 shots, more than half would be in a 3 MOA group, with the rest as flyers out to 5.5ish MOA

at 50 yrds, I can chase coke cans all day long offhand with an AR, and i'm certainly not an expert. I'd call that "decent".

Thanks. I don't feel so bad now about my shooting. Closest thing to a bench is a tree trunk where I shoot. Its not much better than standing, just easier.

I can do the 8" circle. I don't do much better very consistently, but I am getting better as I put more rounds through my rifles. I think I have shot my rifles more this year than the last 2 combined. Practice works wonders.

I would say 8" for all shots at one hundred yards off hand would be good, also. Or, you can do like Mas Ayoob and shoot 20 rounds and circle the best five. :p

One of the stages on the MEUSOC qualification course is to fire 2 rounds standing, 2 rounds kneeling, and 2 rounds prone in less than 10 seconds at a 50yd target. All rounds must go into the vitals zone. The target they use isn't specified but; but we try the same thing with an IDPA target which has an 8" and 6x6" vitals zone.

It is probably one of the less challenging stages on the MEUSOC qualification; but it isn't something to take for granted.

Most of my rifle shooting has been from prone, bench, or using a rest in a deer stand. Firing the CZ 550 FS for the first time the other day; I felt good about getting most of a hundred rounds in an IDPA target at a hundred yards using CAVIM surplus. Knew I needed some work, though.

Ditto Chris Rhines.
You got to reload if you want to shoot that .458
Lead bullet and jacketed bullet loads on the higher end of the .45-70 cartidge chart make great shooter shells for the .458

My own personal scale of poor good excellent kinda goes like this. Offhand excellent is having a "group" on the target. Something you can measure nicely. 1", 3", 5" or whathave you. Good is landing hits on your target. An 8" target fits nicely over your chest, and any hits on that would take care of your badguy/deer/whatever. That's good anyway. What's poor you ask? A miss.

I don't do a lot of benchrest shooting, mainly offhand. But when I do some benching, I like to see neat little groups. It's usually more fun to blast at a target offhand though! :D
