What's the deal with hot brass?

My shooting buddy and I were at the range one day, he was at the bench to the left of me shooting his M1. His brass was mostly landing on or near the bench I was shooting on, a few bouncing off of me. No big deal, I just ignored it.
Then as I was concentrating on my target, looking through my scope, I feel this burning on my left forearm. That little bugger landed perfectly and stuck, and burned.
I managed to keep my cool, engaged the safetly, and slowly rested my rifle on the bench, I started shaking my arm like a bee had stung me. My friend thought it was hilarious, I did too, after the sting went away. :D I had a scar for a while.

Many years ago, we were visiting my Dad's favoriate cousin in Oklahoma. Her husband loaned me his .22 -- a Remington automatic identical to the Browning Automatic .22. I recall he had to special order standard velocity ammo for it.

Anyhow, I jumped a jackrabbit and when I fired, a case went down into my wellingtons and stuck to the top of my instep -- I still have the scar.
