Calibers I own, I own for a reason. Often, it's a consideration of effectiveness/versatility Vs. availability.

.22 LR - rifle I got in high-school. Great for small-game hunting and pest control

12-ga - first gun purchased in my name. Apartment defense, versatility of multiple ammo options

7.62x54R - Rifles at big 5 for $70. Cheap ammo availability, good brush rifle.

7.62x39 - Cheap ammo for plinking, semi-auto, good all-round backup rifle. Bonus: already had cleaning kit for it.

.308 - more power than x39, detachable mags, better for hunting. Still same cleaning supplies.

.45 ACP - Needed a good handgun. .45 is a proven round, that is (in theory) widely available.

.38 Special - Sig. Other needed a self-defence gun, .45 was too powerful for her. Got the gun REAL cheap.

My rifle caliber footprint:

.17 HMR - CZ452 American

.22 Long Rifle - Marlin Model 60

.22 WRF - Winchester Model 1890

.30-06 Springfield - Weatherby Vanguard

Handguns:

.38 S&W Special - S&W KT38 Target Masterpiece

9 mm Parebellum - Keltec P11

.41 Remington Magnum - S&W Model 57

Variety is the spice of life. Are all calibers necessary? No, but each round in combination with the rifle serves a unique purpose.

30-06 (for my M1 Garand, but I've only shot it about 20 times)
7.62x51
5.56x45
22LR
45ACP
9x19

Next on the wish list is a Mosin so I'll be adding 7.62x54R to that list in the not too distant future. After that I want a 7.62x39 and/or a 5.45x39. I plan on sticking to the more common calibers in my future purchases.

.22lr Winchester model 72
7.62x54r Mosin Nagant 91/30 1942

and actually the .22 isnt even mine, dad is letting me borrow it for plinking for the semester

I'm a simple fella when it comes to the rifles ...

338 MXLR
308/7.62 x 51 in several different platforms.
30/30
30-06
223/5.56 x 45
30 Carbine
7.62 x 39

A couple of Marlin carbines in 44 Mag and 357/38 ... and matching pistols of course.

Your standard military/LEO calibers when it comes to the pistol stuff.

9mm
45 ACP
40 S&W and 357 SIG
380 ACP

That's about it. Nothing special, just lots of it.

Oh yeah, and your obligatory 22LR.

Oh, double yeah, and your obligatory 12 ga, 20 ga and even some 410 and 16 gauge laying around somewhere.

I reload every reloadable thing on the list.
