What's Your Favorite J Frame??

I have an original 649 the all stainless .38 spl version. It's my favorite J frame, and I own 4 total.

Favorites include the 642, which is my most carried gun, the 60 LS because it's just so nice looking, the 36 because it looks like something a police chief from my childhood carried, and so on. Any of them in .22 get a second look and serious thought from me, because I expect sometime in the future to give in to the temptation and buy one.

That would be Libby,,,

That would be Libby,,,
Of my five J-Frame revolvers,,,
She is a well worn plain-Jane 3" model 36.

libby.jpg

I found her at The Evil Pawn Shop,,,
She had some bad cosmetic problems,,,
A past owner dropped her on some concrete,,,
And she had a little bit of rust pitting on her cylinder,,,
And she was wearing some atrocious mother-of-toilet-seat pearl grips. :barf:

But her action was tight and the trigger was smooth,,,
Because she wasn't pretty I got her for $325.00 out the door.

I took her home and gave her a good scrubbing inside and out,,,
Then I started wiping some cold-blue on the entire gun,,,
After about a week she had a more uniform blue color.

I tossed those horrible pimp grips,,,
And purchased the wood grips she now wears,,,
All told, even with a bottle of blue, I only have $345.00 in her.

I own a model 36 snubbie, two Model 34's, one Model 63, and Libby,,,
Her 3" barrel is perfect for me and she shoots to point of aim,,,
At 15 yards I am pretty darn good, even when I don't aim,,,
She points to the sweet spot so very naturally for me.

As soon as I make a holster for her,,,
She will take her place as my primary carry piece.

When I first saw her all raggedy with those gawsh-awful plastic pearl grips,,,
The first thing that came to mind were pictures of old west harlots,,,
So I did some research and read about Squirrel Tooth Alice,,,
She seemed to fit the bill so I borrowed her real name.

Yep, Libby is my favorite J-Frame.

I have, or once owned, S&W 36 (2 and 3 inch), 37, 38, 60, 34, 640, 642.
Now I am down to 3--60, 642 and 24.
My favorite for concealed carry??? 642

For pretty: M37 blue/black, white lettering, rose pattern scrimshaw grips.
For carry: M642, Hogue Bantam grips.
Sorry, I've never learned how to post pics on the internut.

I currently only own one

and that is a S&W model 60 Lady Smith. If I were to buy another it would be the 640 pro. I have owned a few J-frames over the years includin a Nickel 36 and a 637-2. My favorite small revolver of all time was Colt Detective special with the full ejector shroud.

Thanks everyone for the opinions and pics. I really enjoyed reading through all the posts. Feel free to add more pics....:)

I'd like to have a 638, 649 or a 640 Pro.

aarondhgraham, I like your "Libby". Had one in my hands at the local gun "showroom" a couple of months back, just like that one, but with near-perfect finish. They wanted $299 for it. But, I let it go. Though I have no need for a third five-shootin' wheelgun, that three-inch barrel and overall frame felt real good in the hand. Probably should have grabbed it.

I own several J frame S&W revolvers, and an Ultra Lite Taurus model 85. My favorite would have to be the 351PD S&W which happens to be a 22 magnum. It has a fiber optics front sight installed from the factory, which I don't care for, but it shoots about three inches to the right at 25 yards, so I installed a Crimson Trace Laser grip on it. At 10 yards with the CTC grips I can hit pretty well. The thing I like about the 351PD is it's light weight, it can be in a pocket and you don't even know it is there... The Blue Titanium Taurus below is my wife's gun.

Sorry. My favorite J frame isn't a J frame, it's a Colt D frame.
If I didn't have two Detective Specials, my Model 36 would be my favorite. So, it's my wife's gun.

I guess my favorite J-frame is my 438. I carry it when my pocket's too tight for a DS.

Snubbies are plenty accurate and excellent for their intended purpose. They are dead simple to operate without any safetys, slides, gadgets or widgets to operate. They're available in several of the best self defense calibres ever invented. Their smaller magazine capacity is of little or no disadvantage. I no longer own any revolvers with barrels greater than 4 inches and most are either 2 or 3 inch. The snubby has been around even before Colt popularised it about 1926 and there is a reason they're still going strong. They're accurate, sturdy, concealable, powerful, dependable, and shootable from almost any position even pushed up against an adversary or from inside a pocket.
When it absolutely, positively, has to go bang the 2nd time, only a revolver will do.

They don't care how strong your grip is, if the barrel is right up against the target or if you're shooting from an enclosed place like a pocket.

Just sold my model 37 to finance another gun, but it was a good j frame choice. It was an old pinned barrel, wood stock model, and was the lightest and most carry-able of all of my powerful handguns. Recoil was manageable, but compared to other .38's, it had more bite.

I now have two vintage model 36's, which I love dearly, but don't carry as I tend to fuss over them...they're both in real good shape. :) If I were getting something to carry, I'd look at a new 442. If you want a vintage piece to carry, you could get an old model 60 - the stainless is more forgiving.

My favorite and almost everyday carry gun is my M640-1 Pro. I carry it in a Lobo Original Pancake holster, loaded with Speer 135 gr SB plus P. I would like to try the same in Magnum, if I can find some. It is a very reduced load.
My pocket protector is a M442-2, carried in a Mika holster loaded with hard cast WC's from Double Tap. About 750 FPS.
Both revolvers are no lock versions.
I actually prefer shooting the J frame revolvers. Especially, the steel ones.

Best,
Rick

I have a small .380 auto, then I bought a M&P Compact in .40, then I bought a 442 no-lock. The 442 is what I carry because it is easiest to conceal for me.

I shoot it with the WWB 125g JSP +P .38s that walmart sells. Recoil isn't that bad but when I shoot more than a three or four cylinders full, I wear a light leather glove so my skin doesn't get torn up.

I love shooting falling plates with it.
