Which military surplus rifle fits you best?

Jenrick; Look around for a long butt stock for your LE. The vast majority of LEs out there have normal length butts, a few will have short length, and a few will even have bantam length.

FN-49 (in 7x57)
Front sight is a little wide, no real windage adjustable sights - without a hammer.
VERY comfortable shooting it standing , it holds correct (for me).
Everyone should try to get a FN-49 in any caliber-I want one in 6.5x55. & 308,30-06,8x57.........
AK's just plain suck as far as fit for me, but I still like'em - if in dire need I'd possibly grab the AK over ...........nah, the AR wins EVERY TIME.
Sks- decent all around, I really need to try some good ammo in the $94 (with shipping:neener:) russies I got for me and the boys a few years ago. I still think those were new rifles, along with a few CZ-52's I bought, all of them were way to nice and purty to be "arsenal worked"
FAL- perfect all around, crappy sights for what you have in the chamber, wish like hell they would get the 7x57 barrels for that rifle. At least a 7mm-08, anyways - the FAL really helps my shooting - maybe I'm comfortable with it...don't know; just like it.
Garand - very possibly the best fit in a rifle ever for me, hell - I've paid plenty for a shotgun fit from a pro and it wasn't very much better.
Guess I have gotten used to slimmer rifles,strange- I like fat girls (like them ALL!!) but skinny rifles:rolleyes:
M16A2 - the schizzle - got it ALL and a box of cookies. 1st choice over anything ever made, just a suck-a$$ caliber for it's intended purpose -lets get it in 6x45.

As an unemployed man, I've been able to use some of my free time to shoot the rifles and ammo I bought while working.

Quick question/concern- is this a temporary or permanent situation?

The reason I bring it up, our hobby costs $$$ to keep going and it can be frustrating to be unemployed and have a big wish list (I've been there). :(

mainmech, LOVE that movie, all time favorite western.

Fave milsurp, a complete surprise to me, as I hated to even LOOK at them before I picked one up so cheap even I couldn't pass it up...and then it gave me a few MOA groups with handloads, had light sweet recoil, easy to use...

1943 Longbranch No4MK1* Paid $50...

1903A3 fits me very well except for my being born with the curse of being left handed. The length of pull is a little short, but I can work with it. I love the fine bladed front sight. It feels like I can put the sight right where I need it to go without any guess work. I don't see anything flimsy about this rifle. The M1903 version was plenty robust for the Marines on Guadalcanal, who sung the praises of the rifle. In fact they weren't too keen on giving up the 03 for a new fangled Garand. :)

K98k Mauser fits me well. The sights aren't as good as the 03A3, but the rifle shoots well in my hands, and feels comfortable. Recoil is surprisingly light. Seems to be a softer shooter than the 03, although that could be a result of the ammo I've been using.

Lee Enfield No4Mk1 is new to my collection. It doesn't fit me that well at all, and the cock on close action is taking some getting used to. The butt plate is shaped so it effectively doubles as a meat tenderizer. Accuracy so far is acceptable but not nearly up to the standards of the Mauser, and nowhere near the tackdriver the 03 is.

Overall my Garand is the best compromise. It's a soft shooter compared to the others, and the adjustability of the sights can't be beat. It isn't as accurate as the 03, but is certainly combat accurate, and reliable to boot.

I would have to vote for
1. SMLE my first high power, and I love the 10 rd detachable mag
2. 1917. mine is accurate and "mild " for a -06
3. swede carbine '94 maybe? light, short, accurate and mild.

Quick question/concern- is this a temporary or permanent situation?

Ideally, it's temporary. I'm 25, have a master's degree, and am ready to work, but I get passed up in favor of more experienced candidates every single time, no matter how positive my interview feedback is. There are almost no junior-level positions open--in a slumping economy, they're the first to go, which is how I became unemployed in the first place! I suppose the fact that I'm getting interviewed for mid- and senior-level jobs is amazing enough.

Right now cost mitigation is the name of the game. I have no debt and don't pay rent (I built the deck and re-floored this place so that was my reward), so my only expenses are food, utilities, gasoline, and health insurance. My gun wish list might be in the trash, but that won't stop me from using the guns and ammo I already own.

7. K98 & M24/47. I don't really care for Mausers. I don't like the sight picture and I don't like the fact that they seem to shoot 4 to 6 inches high at 100 yards.

Notice that the sight graduations on mausers (at least my mauser) start at 200 yards.

I have found that mine shoots just at 3 inches high at 100 yards, when set at the minimum distance.

The K31 and Mosin 91/30 balance the best for me, followed by the K98 Mauser, the M24/47 and VZ24. Yugo SKS has too short a pull for me. M44 is a fun rifle to shoot, but balance is so-so. M38 is a disaster for me. It doesn't work on any level for me. I held, but never shot, Finnish M39 and Swede M38, which felt real good, but again, no shooting experience.

M1 Garands, both original issue
My second one is the reissue of the AR10B collector rifle 60th annv. It's still being used in a lot of African countries so I guess it could be called a military rifle. I shoot that one most of the time now.

My Favorite has to be my K31. none of my surplus rifles feel as good in my hands as it does. That said my Mas 36, and the Enfield No.4 Mk II are right up there as well in my opinon. For Semi-Auto's it would be my M1 Garand, followed closely by my Russian SKS.

Best-Yugo M48 Mausers and Garands are at the top of my list...just about perfect in every way!

Good-91/30 and M38 Mosins balance well for me too. 1873 & 1884 Trapdoors feels good in the hands too! M1 Carbine & 1917 fit the 'good' category as well.

Average-FN49 and K31 about the same. AK's not too far off here.

Bad-Can't get used to the barrel-heavy SKS...maybe should get rid of that bayonet!

1. Spanish fr-8. Nice short carbine with a smooth bolt. Kick like %$#@! I love the power and punch of the .308.
2. M44, mainly for the free fireworks show.:D
3. K31 straight pull (nuff said)
4. M96. Light recoil and exxxxxxtremely accurate!
5. VZ24 8mm mauser. Carbine length and powerful.
6. Sks. Light recoil, cheaper ammo. I like the x39 round. Power without the recoil.
7. Wasr-10 Ak47. Same as the Sks, but goes bang longer.
8. Spanish m1916 Civil guardia. Another .308 that gets over looked due to the supposedly "soft metal". If you are afraid to shoot yours, I will gladly take it off of your hands.:)
9. 91/30 nagant. Always gets disqusted looks from the guy next to you at the range. Fireworks and loud as hell.
10. Hi-point 995 carbine with ati stock. Short, light, and tuff as woodpecker lips.
11. Erma M1-22. The .22 that looks like the M1 carbine. Accurate and cheap to shoot. The only drawback to this rifle is the magazine. Cost more than the gun.
12. Turkish m38. Fairly accurate, but long as a bad day at work.
I realize that a couple of these are not milsurps, but this is the order of my affections to my addiction....

Hello, my name is pinstripe and I am a milsurp addict............:D

My Finnish M-27 and M-91s fit me very well, but for pure point-and-shoot, I have to concede my Turkish short rifles are tops, followed by my M-27 and Wz.29 Polish mauser.

Im left handed so all my milsurp bolt actions I have to get use to,I agree the K31 is not the best egronomics for me.Still like em but.......

The mausers ,M1903 and Garands/M1A are my fav.

My .303 Enfields are a little clunky to me,but I like it still.

I should add the AR15 is awesome for me,I love them when all is said and done.

Best shooter I've got as far as I'm concerned, and the first rifle I ever bought, something like twenty years ago.

Behold my positively ancient but oh-so-wonderful Schmidt Rubin 1911:

I like short guns and the M1 Carbine heads the list for me. It's light, handy and just powerful enough to repel boarders.

I have a nice battlefield pickup Type 38 Carbine that is fun to shoot.

Another fav of mine is a Berthier '92 Musketoon. It's light, short, ugly and and always attracts attention.
