Laminates. We gave up on the walnut, but we can always turn to Beech. That was the least desireable for us of the two woods typically used. Those very long forearms and foregrips are a delicate part to make and walnut would handle the stress better than Beech.
We're now making special support jigs for them in our Swiss Products machine shop. Some of the laminate colors are pretty darned cool looking.

what does it take to make laminated stockwood?
Hardwood laminates bonded under extreme pressure with the right adhesives. Plywood always has hit and miss edges and inferior adhesives for bonding. It will absorb moisture the way a hardwood bonded laminate will not.
Plywood is pressure bonded, but not the same way at all.

Hey guys,
Part V of the build process is here, I did some shaping, cutting, sanding, trimming... the whole she-bang. She's looking pretty good. I took the belt sander and started working on some angles on the hand grip and trigger guard area, then I moved to the dremel and started cutting into the stock for shaping (much like the way a router would) and shaped in the body lines.

Keep in mind that some people would like a heavier stock to couteract the Mosin's recoil. My brother has a 300 Remington Ultra Mag which weighs around 18 pounds total and the recoil is next to nothing. I know that's a lot of rifle to lug around, but anything heavier than the the lightweight original issue 91/30 stock would be a plus in lessening the recoil.

I have a feeling that it'll come out a bit lighter than I hoped for. When I get to the selling stages I'll use some heavier wood.

Loon: I'm thinking, if I have to, putting some metal plugs if recoil is a little stiff. At least putting weight in the stock to keep it from beating up the user!
Savage: I'm enjoying the progress as much as you are! Yeah, I do get frustrated with it, but that just makes the anticipation a whole let better, seeing if all the hard work is going to pay off!

Is there a way you could start mass producing these? It would be difficult to fill orders when you spend this much time on just one.

All it takes is muunny. 
A three up system will come in around $10,000.00 ready for production. He'll need some hands-on instruction in stock making on a duplicator first. Not hard to do.... it just takes the will and the bucks to get it off the ground.

It's only taking this long because I have other things I need to do before I can get around to working on the stock, but it's coming together slowly but surely.

Sorry guys, haven't really been able to make much progress, been hampered by my step-dad and his power-tool Nazism. So bear with me. And my computer just crashed tonight, so a lot of my stock designs just went down the drain. I won't be able to post any pics or vids until its fixed, thank God my iPod touch supports web browsing and THR!

I think it's the hard drive, but it's in a little net book. Screen says disk read error and keeps telling me to try again.

Don't know much about computers at all.
LOL, they are like women. When they are happy with you they make life SOOO much eaiser, but when they arnt....well, good luck trying to find the right fix without a good manual that you WILL NOT understand.
Actually, Ive gotten pretty good at patching them back together lately....cant afford new ones LOL.
