Why all the 1911 hate?

"but why so stingy"

Alduro-get a 45ACP pistol that won't Kaboom with lead semi wadcutters, and I'll play nice :D

When is the next DFW shoot-still on for March 26th at Gibsons? I made the first but my schedule changed so I have not been able to make it another. I am back on track and now have Sat-Sun-Mon off. Lookin forward to it.

The main reason I shoot the Glock is because of the 1911. I hate the 1911 because:

1. After thousands of dollars worth of quality gunsmithing work by American Handgunner Club 100 gunsmiths, with every part of the gun tuned or adjusted for maximum reliability, 1911s, in my experience, will still jam, FTF or FTE, never in practice and always during a match :). You can take a Glock out of the box, check the bore for grease or obstructions, and take it out and shoot it, and it will run.

2. Glocks have no grip screw bushings or grip screws to come loose. Most new 1911s, in my experience, will have at least one grip screw bushing come loose when you take the grips off the first time, and it is usually attached to the grip screw itself, and it screws out of the frame.

3. A stock Glock does not hurt your hand and draw blood when you shoot it, unlike a 1911A1 with the stock hammer and the stock grip safety (YMMV, but it does it to me).

4. A stock Glock does not have to have aftermarket expensive magazines to function properly (ie Wilson's). IME the magazine that comes with most 1911s was made by the lowest bidder with soft metal bodies and feed lips. You do not have to "tune" the magazines or buy aftermarket magazines for a Glock.

5. The number one PITA with a 1911, the extractor. Most 1911s out of the box will have to have their extractor replaced with a better quality unit to maintain extractor tension. The Glock extractor is fine out of the box.

6. Glocks do not have plunger tubes that will come off of the frame. I once had a Series One Kimber, and during shooting the plunger tube came off. A gunsmith charged me 50 DOLLARS to replace that plunger tube (at that time about a six dollar part that took two minutes to install). That is the main incident that attracted me to the Glock. No plunger tube.

YMMV, but these are the main things that make me hate the 1911. Too much money for not enough gun.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

True 1911s versus modified

I have true 1911s i.e. Colts and have had modified custom
1911s.

The true 1911s have skinny sights. They may also cut into
the fleshy hands of some. The triggers are good to go without any modification. They are very reliable and surprizingly accurate.

It is not the true 1911s that I hate, it is the dickered with that I have a hate for. I bought a customized with all kinds of good parts on it. However, the assembled gun just could not be brought to both reliability and accuracy.
This lesson costed about $2000.00.

To each his own. Love what you will and hate what you will. However, isn't a wide range of choices a good thing??

So, the Glock hate thread is twice as long as this one, so we can assume that twice as many people hate Glocks as hate 1911's right?

 All in good fun people......

Ha, good one. :)

I only shoot 1911's, but really dislike some of the companies that produce 1911's...Does that count? ;)

Glocks are so ergonomically designed they fit almost anyones hands.
not mine. at least with a 1911 i can put slim grips, a shorter trigger, and a different msh to personalize it to my fat hands with short stumpy fingers.

I mean, why spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for a pistol based on a one hundred year old design that is heavy and has a low ammunition capacity compared to a modern plastic pistol?

Agree! That's why I buy the modern widebody versions of 1911 most of the time. :)

Gaston's ideas about proper human ergonomics while holding a handgun must be why Springfield does so well with the XD. :)

1911 hate

I have a couple of 1911's and I like them. I also have other auto feeders which I also like. As I said before, there is no one perfect gun for everyone, in my humble opinion.

With a glock even if the bad guy pushes up against you you can still shoot him. You can't do that with a 1911.

Wrong about the Glock. It can be pushed out of battery just like any other semi-auto.

I love the 1911. My first good one was a Kimber Classic Series 1 gun that shot very well. I just bought a Wilson CQB with a rail and its ran great. So far its gone though 500 rounds without a snag. It shoots very well. I have shot 2 perfect scores on my departments qual course with it and just one that was 1 point below possible. I had only done that once before with my Glock 21 in 6 years. 1911's are the most shootable design made due to their low bore axis, short trigger with a short trigger reset. They are simply easy to shoot fast and well. A good 1911 is a gun to keep.

I wont bash a kimber, I wont bash a colt, I wont bash a Springfield, but I think I (and everyone else who shoots pistols) have the right to bash the AMT hardballer.

Please forgive me for being dorky here... but what exactly is wrong with the Hardballer? I got mine when they first came out... and had a few failures to return to battery the first month or so cause it was so darned tight. But I still shoot it every now and then and it works fine. :)
