Not hate... My handguns, AR's and shotguns all have a place in my HD arsenal. But shotguns have traditionally been over hyped and over rated. When people point out the truth some are offended.
The biggest selling point for shotguns traditionally is that they were inexpensive and versatile enough for someone to have a hunting gun that would serve dual roles as a HD gun. Within a limited range buckshot can be formidable and the ability to throw multiple projectibles makes it easier to hit moving targets, but there are downsides.
Most people are now discovering that a compact AR or PCC is every bit as effective at close range in an even lighter, more compact weapon. Buckshot recoil is in 300 WM range. An AR or PC will hold 6X the ammo and generate about 1/6 the recoil. And while it is still possible to get a reliable shotgun for less money the gap has closed considerably.
Indoors I still prefer a handgun. Being able to have one hand free is important and having a weapon harder for an intruder to get their hands on can be an asset. Despite the myths modern handgun rounds are every bit as effective as rifle rounds at close ranges. It is just easier to get good hits as ranges increase with a long gun.
Inside MY home there is no possibility of a shot longer than about 3-5 yards. Not enough distance for a shotgun pattern to be an asset and close enough for the high probability of a hit with a handgun. If I did choose to use a long gun indoors I'd much prefer the lighter, more compact short rifle with 1/6 the recoil. That doesn't make a shotgun a BAD choice. But based on the criteria important to me a short barreled rifle is a BETTER choice. And the trend among most people is going in the same direction.
On my property, where my shotgun would shine is outdoors at ranges between 10-40 yards, especially if trying to hit moving targets.
