Wilson 870 extension problem

I recently purchased a Wilson +1 extension kit for a 1980s vintage 870 Express (standard 4 shot mag tube).

Upon receiving the kit, I immediately installed the provided follower, spring, and extension. I then attempted to load five Estate brand 00 buck shells, but could only fit four shells in the mag tube.

I then tried a mixture of Federal FC 00 buck and Federal 7 1/2 bird load but still could not get five shells as advertised.

The Estate shells are similar to Academy Monarch brand 00 buck in construction, and measure a hair over 2 5/8, while the above Federal shells were both slightly shorter.

I have searched the net high and low and found several other reports of the same problem, but no clear solution. I've read it might be the spring length, Wilson follower, or both.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I am guess this is most likely you issue.

Research and learn and then you can remove the dimple in the magazine tube that is stopping you from loading more ammo.

My 870 has no dimples in the mag tube. The spring is captured by the old style spring cup.

Hmmm... then look for a burr at the end of the magazine tube or the begining of the extension that is catching the follower. Sometimes the magazine cap will roll the end of the tube and that rolled edge/burr is keeping the follower from making the transition.

I'll inspect it closer. I have also heard that the wilson follower might be a factor in some guns....but I don't know how as long as it is with their components.

Trying to think outside the box here, can you actually fit 5 shells in the empty mag tube? The Wilson +1 extension is barely long enough to hold the Wilson long tail follower let alone the compressed spring so you are really only getting full length of the tube at best.

Without the +1 extension, had you been able to fit 4 shells without issue or only 3?

Yes, it was and still is accepting four shells just fine.

Try using your standard mag spring and shell follower with the +1 extension. The Wilson spring is not that much longer than stock.
