My grandfather gave me his Winchester 190 from when he was kid. Unfortunately, it won't chamber a round. I took it apart and cleaned it. However, when I try to chamber a round, it won't fit into the barrel. Even when I had it apart and tried to drop a round in the chamber, it wouldn't fit. There is a significant amount of rust on the outside, I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Any suggestions?

Check and see a the rim got ripped off a shell and left the casing stuck in the chamber. this would keep it from chambering. also double check and make sure you you have the correct ammo for the rifle.

Thanks guys. That seems entirely probable, as when I looked in it seems like there was a lining in the barrel, but it's probably a shell. How does one go about removing it?

Try a brand new bronze bore brush.
Screw it on the rod inside the ejection port, then pull it partway into the chamber and knock it back out with the cleaning rod.

The new sharp bristles may very likely snag the case mouth and pop it out along with the brush.

How young is your grandfather anyway?
The Winchester 190 was only made from 1967 to 1980.

I'm going to try that brush idea, I have some brand new brushes. And now that I'm looking at it, I think I'm mistaken about it being his from a kid. He had one that he won in a contest in middle school or high school, but I think it was his pump.

Just to follow up, the brush idea didn't work. I guess it was stuck too tight. We took a tap that was just big enough to fit down the barrel. It got stuck in the shell, and we took a rod and hammered it out. Thanks for all the help.

Also, my grandfather won the gun in a raffle when he was a senior in high school. He said it was probably '68.

Heck, I was a Staff Sargent in Uncle Sam's Army in 1968.

You're just a young whipper-snapper yet!
