It's been going on three months since I got out to shoot skeet and trap, between work, sickness, and life getting in the way, finally called my buddy and said "let's shoot no matter the weather".
Nice sunny brisk day, was 37* with 25-35MPH winds out of the east mostly, veering from the north occasionally. Ranges all face north with a wood line behind us that made for rolling winds and eddys. I had two shirts, a hoodie and a shooting coat on, pretty bundled up, the wind had some bite. We decided to shoot a couple rounds of skeet and a couple rounds of trap. We watched a squad shooting skeet before us, seeing high house targets stall out and drop down like a frisbee between center of field and low house, sometimes..., low house made like a bullet about 8'-10' of the ground, bouncing 2'-4' depending on wind currents, sometimes... About the time you expected a crazy target there would be a slight lull in the wind and they would fly somewhat normal. I somehow managed to shoot a 23 and a 24, my buddy, not so lucky, somewhere in the 17 range.
On to an exciting couple rounds of trap from the 16 yard line. Right hand targets were catching the wind and shooting up high and veering left pretty hard, left hand targets were pushing down flat and veering left even further, middle targets you could never quite tell what they were going to do at the whims of the winds. My buddy did a bit better here, I believe he managed a 20 on his first round and then a 21, using a gun I picked up for him to try last December that he had never shot before, a used Remington 870 TB. He kinda likes it so far, we'll take it out on a better, less windy day and see how he actually shoots when targets aren't crazy. I shot a 21 and a 24 which is pretty decent as I am primarily a skeet shooter.
Hey, all in all a nice day shooting. Not too many out, a few league shooters trying to get their targets in before the end of the month, some collegiate shooters out, local college started a Sporting Clays program affiliated with our club, good to see that. Had fun, hope decent weather starts to show up soon.
