Shooting the 1K yd here in TN is just the greatest! From the NM scorched wind-blown parries to the serene, landscaped grass surrounded by acres of heavenly hardwood trees. Well, that and the fact that my very first round missed the "X" by 2"! I have a carbon fiber barrel with a brake. I'm being told that the carbon fiber will begin to wander with heat. This has become painfully true. I wanted to call it fatigue but It's more of a constant. Sighting in new rounds via bench resting and the same wondering occurs. Watching the LD shooting shows, and I see 99% steel barrels. I'd like to go to a 6mm variant but I'm so heavenly invested in the 6.5CM, I think I'll stay there. I have a 700 platform and for advice I get everything to order one and screw it on, to send it in and have it done "right". But first, which barrel? Oh, on the brake, I'm told that there are competitions that don't allow them. I'd at least want a threaded barrel? Asking here if a threaded barrel interferes with harmonics. Last is a suppressor a good idea? Not for hearing as much as for speed and accuracy of the rounds.

The first four shots were in the X. Then the next four were close to the X and then even further out. Perhaps a minute and less between shots.

Where in tn are you? Close to bugholes?
You’ll be tickled pink if you use them. Only thing I’d ask them to do though besides the barrel, is pin the recoil lug to the reciever, it saves headache when installing another barrel.

They done a prefit Brux barrel for my panda. Installed the barrel myself, it works, it competition level works.

Find someone who sells barrels much like Bugholes and ask them what they recommend I bet they have a good idea also I didn’t see your budget listed and yes I run a suppressor on all my 6.5’s and love it I Can’t recommend it enough

I'm not sure of what I should consider for a budget? Accuracy foremost, life of the thing second? Fun to go shopping. Can my carbon wrapped be put on a hunting stock. Or what would it take to make a hunter out of it?

Figure about $500 for a premium barrel, then the cost of a gunsmith to swap the barrel.

The carbon fiber can't be unwrapped to put on your stock.

My last 3 have been Bartlein's bought at Bugholes and installed by my smith. Every one has shot and cleaned up very well.

Contoured Bartlein barrels are in the $450 range.

IF you're looking for something in the heavy target weight, they're usually in stock. Sporter profiles are a whole different story. IF you have to order from the manufacturer you could be looking at 6-8 months.

If you don't want to double your cost having a barrel fit, just make a ramage.... it's a Remington that uses a barrel nut.... I run a lot of savages and that's my route when my 700 308 barrel is done... it's about a 20 minute job and a forester headspace go guage is easily had.... the next swap if you want to change again is just as easy...
Northland probably has what you need in stock...

Thx. Good stuff!

I think you would be ok with most any of the custom barrel makers. I favor Krieger and have several. Think about $450-$500 for the barrel and maybe about the same to have it threaded and chambered.
Appreciations!

When it comes to Bolt Action Rifle barrels and long distance, competitive shooting, a well known and even nationally known local gunsmith says "if the barrel starts with a B, it's gonna shoot great.Bartlein, Broughton, Brux."

Well from the PRS BLOG in 2019:

This is an interesting chart. Thx. I had thought the Proof was a carbon wrap?
They are also making SS pre-fit Competition Contour barrels for many actions, geared towards the PRS game. They are attractively priced and shoot very well.
