Yeah, for home defense it would be. Too much penetration, that round will keep going and going. Plus, the noise indoors will be huge.
For defense outside the home, they are very good. With stripper clips, they can be reloaded quickly. While not as high firepower as an AR or AK, the Mosin Nagant is still nothing to sneeze at if one is pointed in your direction.
Good Lord, yes! Would you take an M1 Garand or M1A for home defense? Probably not. This is a poor choice, as either a 20 or 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 Buckshot or an M1 Carbine would be a far better selection.
If it is all you have, learn to use it well. If you can afford a slide action shotgun, as I had stated earlier, the 20 or 12 gauge would be far more beneficial.
Too long and bulky to maneuver indoors, or frequently outdoors.
Slow to cycle the action.
Slow to reload, even with strippers.
Rimlock freezes the action, even though it has the thingy that 'makes rimlock impossible'.
Limited capacity.
Yes but before we can help you are you thinking the mosin due to that is all you have. It would be served more as a club than a firearm due to its extreme over penetration and noise.
That's definitely true. I would never choose a Mosin to defend my home if I could choose any arbitrary gun. But I wouldn't despair if I had to use one. They still put very lethal holes in people and are repeaters. That's not a bad start.
Yeah I was thinking as in "if it's mosin or nothing..." would it be too much or should you go for the lamp? Say you were house watching and all you had was a mosin, you can't get into his safe or anything like that and you just happen to have not any other firearms on hand is a mosin of much use or is the possibility of collateral too much?
They make great bayonet handles, and compared to a pump gun they are slow and awkward, but the flashbang effect and the fireball you get from one would be why CHOOSING one wouldn't be great. But remember the firs rule in any gunfight: have a gun. I wouldn't hesitate to use it if it was all i had.
Let's say your at home, watching wrestling on the TV and suddenly, you realize some bad hombre has snuck past Ol' Blue, broken into your mobile home and is coming after you with a Taser, intent on finding out where you keep your prize collectible Cheetos.
Now, he's got that Taser so that means you can't close with him and give him a good Judy-chop. All you got left between you and the horror of losing your prize Cheetos (the crown jewel of the collection being the one that looks like General Lee) is the Mosin leaning against the wall near your lounge chair.
Only thing to do is grab your faithful Karate Rifle deploy the bayonet and use it to keep the Cheeto Burglar away until you can wrestle the bolt open, chamber a round and shoot. If you miss, continue stabbing at that Bad Hombre until you can fumble another round into the chamber or Ol' Blue magnets in to see what the ruckus is about and if your lucky, bites that Bad Hombre on the tucass
