i've got an airhorn that seems to work notifies the owners i need help too. it does make em stop but they are still angry

I have used my walking stick several times over the years. An basketball game accident 10 years a go left me unable to run any more. Mine is home made with a soild brass top from a old mule harness. I Also carry pepper spray and a 4 inch folding knife that I keep razor sharp. So far so good I have not been bitten since I was a child and I am 43 now.

Even big strong dogs hate getting zapped by a stun gun. No, not always the best thing for fending off an attack, but it stings and it hurts them in a way they've never been hurt before, and they will think twice about coming back for more. They remember it, too. And it's legal to carry nearly everywhere without any special permits. If dogs were my primary worry, some Fox Labs pepper spray and a stungun would be at the top of my list. And if possible, I would have a CCW in case things got REALLY hairy. Don't get me wrong, I will kill an attacking dog without hesitation if that's what is really required to stop the attack - but I am a dog lover and would be willing to take a certain amount of abuse including damage requiring stitches if I could stop the attack by other means. Now, a pack situation - that's potentially a different matter and depends a lot on circumstances. I've heard of free-roaming packs intentionally attacking humans - sometimes a dozen or more at a time. If you are cornered by an agressive pack and you know it's getting about SHTF time, then you probably don't have a choice... if you have arms you are going to use them.

Aiming is difficult on an attacking or fighting dog. I know a police officer who was investigating a burglary call, when a Doberman kept on the property attacked him. He stopped it with a shot -- but it was because it was in pain, and distracted, not because it was incapable of attacking. He hit the shoulder, just gave it a non-lethal, painful cut.

I know a pit bull, adopted as a stray, that one day was tearing up the owner's valued sheep dog. Nothing could get him to let go, so the owner shot him in the head.

Ended up with a non-lethal hole through the top and bottom of his muzzle, which they had repaired, and had him neutered at the same time. No more trouble between the dogs since.

In both instances, the dogs were less than ten feet away. The pit was near-contact distance, but he had hold of a dog they didn't want to hurt.

If you plan to shoot a dog with a pistol, plan to have to shoot it more than once, because you may not effectively stop it.

I have found that a shaken walking stick usually intimidates a charging dog, and it also gives me a very effective means of punishing the few that have continued the attack to be close enough to meet the cane. I have fired a pistol at one (1) canine in my life -- a coyote that was approaching my Brittany while she was casting for quail. I missed him, but he left the area in a hurry, which was all I cared about.

Killing it isn't always necessary.

In Utah, animals are a strict liability. There are never circumstances under which they are allowed to bite you. Even if you are a trespassing felon, they cannot bite you, and the owner is liable.

If I had some kind of job, like a utility inspector that required you to go onto possibly risky property, I would read the fine print about whether or not you are allowed to refuse to enter property you consider dangerous.

The ideal shot for dangerous animals would be to take a knee, aimed at center mass, and see if they stop short of you. If they don't, repeated hits to center of mass. The odds are small I will ever have to shoot a person, but I would call it better than 50/50 I might have to drop a dog one day, I've come close a few times, and I think about it a lot.

And I don't trust sprays to stop a canine any more than I trust them to stop a human. (Iffy at best.)

we got issued a dog spray in ulster for awhile as some people thought it was fun to set dogs on patrols.
don't know what it was worked well on dogs and there owners so got taken away:(

And furthermore, if someone shoots at my dogs on my property, I have to assume he's coming for me.
Enjoy your prison stay. Oh, and learn to control your dogs when you get out.

I had an incident with a dog recently, Its a long story but maybe it can give you a bit of insight.

I weigh 135 lbs

Last summer, out of an act of kindness, I let a friend stay in my home (who happened to be addicted to heroin but not through her own doing, doctors). The one stipulation for staying in my house while I was in Puerto Rico was that her friend (if he got out of jail on his traffic/gun/drug/whatever/loser charge) could absolutely not come to my house and especially not with his PitBull, for which I had almost been arrested previously.

Unfortunately my trip to PR was cut short by the suicide of a friend. I returned home to find my house trashed by an unconcious girl and inhabited by an insane, gun weilding junky who thought it was okay to be in my house while I was out of town.

When I came to my house, I was unarmed and tired from the airplane ride from PR to Denver during a hurricane. I walked into my house to be attacked by a PitBull who I never expected to be there.

the moment I entered my house the dog and owner became agitated. The owner was obviously on drugs. I asked all three parties, including the dog to leave, at which point I entered my room and drew my weapon.

I asked them to leave again. The dog owner became more agitated, though he did not know i was armed. I re entered the living room where these people seemed to have accumulated and Jason, the dogs owner, told the dog, Prevo to attack me! I drew my weapon and shot the dog twice (Im not terribly fond of that memory) and in turn the owner called the police on myself.

The denver police get there FAST!

They arrested Jason, Let the girl go (she got kicked out) and sent me back to my living room to clean up Prevo.

The point of my story is that IF you really have to defend yourself, from mortal danger, against a dog, (it really has to be life threatening) bring something bigger than a 9mm if the dog is bigger than or appx the same size as a PB.

Just some thoughts,

-FL
